A more interesting figure would be the amount of money made from paying guests year on year. As with a 32% increase in memberships, alot of those visits, would be repeat visitors, I know I went at least 30 times last year, plus my child and partner, that's nearly 100 for just us.

That can presumably be obtained from the Annual Report in due course.

I agree it'd be cool to see that but from a publicity standpoint releasing the new record breaking attendance is probably smarter. You never know, someone might look at that and think if that many people love the zoo maybe they should take a trip to visit with their friends/family.

they would make a lot if they sold a guide book.

I do sometimes wonder about the economic viability of guidebooks. They must have a lot of initial costs putting one together, then regular visitors (by that I'm thinking 2-3 times a year) are going to want updated versions.

I have a lot of questions about this so I'll start another thread as I don't want to send the news thread off track

First major birth of the year. Black Rhino, Ema Elsa gave birth to a male calf on Saturday evening (16th January)

This is the first calf sired by male, Kifaru since his arrival from Hannover in 2014. Very significant :)

Just a few quick questions about Chester’s bird collection?

Just looking on Zootierliste the listing says they have the following I was wondering if this is correct and if so where are they within the collection

White necked partridge
Grey winged blackbird
Collared grosbeak
Javan green magpie
Kilimanjaro white eye
Congo peafowl
Black necked weaver
White tailed jay
Philippine scops owl
Red tailed Laughingthrush
Vietnamese pheasant

Non bird species bit still interested as if the collection hold the following –

Myanmar thamin

Philippine Scops Owl - tropical realm. Top floor, end aviary

Javan Green Magpie are offshow

Do the cassowaries still live in Chester? Last few times I've been they haven't been in their usual house.

Cassowaries: in their new enclosure in Islands, just past the warty pigs

White-eyes, black-necked weavers and red-tailed laughingthrush free flying in tropical realm

Congo Peafowl and philippine scops are in the upstairs aviaries in the Tropical Realm

All the other birds you listed are currently off display, i believe.

Thamin share a paddock with the indian rhinos

There is just the 1 Black-necked Weaver in the Tropical Realm unless they have brought some more in.

As for the Congo Peafowl they are in the same aviary that they have been in at Chester in the Tropical Realm, that they have been in since they arrived in 199?!!

Many thanks folks for the replies I had a mind blank about the Congo Peafowl and now realise that the Luzon and Philippine scops are the same bird again many thanks for the replies.

Indeed - unfortunately it doesn't really count as a first breeding of the species at Chester for obvious reasons, but it is a damn good sign for the future.
