Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Member's Days

Currently, I'm scheduled to go to the Member's Day at Chester Zoo on the 4th November.

What I'd like to know is what are these days like? From the itinerary it seems very interesting. If anyone has any information, thanks in advance.

I honestly don't know CZJimmy. I had hoped to attend one of these members' days. The September one was held two days before one of my planned visits, so I didn't go. The next one is on a Sunday, a day on which I don't visit much.

I went to the one in sept, but had to leave early, but it was interesting and a different.

I suppose my highlight was catching up with the zoo keepers on the giraffe section i did my zoo keeper for the day, am surprised they remebered me as it was over a year.

Just one thing some of the keepers don't really like to talking to people and come across a bit rude, but then am not surprised!

It sounds like when the zoo introduced keeper talks in the mid 1980s. Two sections were enthusiastic and helpful, the keeper on one section was obviously
not interested, and on the other sections no one ever appeared.

I went to the member's day today and found it to be really interesting. Due to time constraints, I was only able to speak to the Elephant, Chimp, Orang, Rhino and Lion keepers but i found out quite a lot.

- The cheetahs are arriving in March with an exhibit opening in May
- There will be an elevated pathway going through the cheetah exhibit. This will form part of the new bridge. There will also be an anoa viewing area included with the bridge.
- A new chimp house/complex could be included in the superzoo.
- Possible arrival of Bonobos and Gorillas with the superzoo.
- Manatees were originally in the new Aquarium plans as well as an extended sealion area.
- Apache, the female Indian Rhino should be arriving on the 12th December
- Tejas is leaving the zoo in January (he attracted a massive crowd today)

No, for some reason, Manatees have been scrapped from the aquarium plans. It would have been interesting to see how Chester exhibited them. If i remember correctly, they are meant to be in the Bristol environmental park though...

...and Edinburgh I think.

The cheetah's sound interesting. I'm really happy to hear about a potential extension of the Sea Lion exhibit, there exhibit isn't that bad but its not as good as I'd expect from Chester.

more info on the cheetahs:

There will be 6 arriving - 3 males and 3 females.

To begin with they will be kept in a male group and a female group in seperate pens and will gradually be introduced to each other over time.

I want manatees!!!!! BRING THEM BACK.

The cheetah developments seem very exciting. Where are they coming from?

Are there any new species of small birds,as I was told over the summer that the the new quarantine station was expected to become full of 'little tweeters'

Sorry, I didn't get to ask where the cheetahs are coming from and i didn't manage to go to one of the bird events, so I can't answer your second question.

Hi - just out of quarantine are half-masked and masked weavers, a group of each.A new Luzon Bleeding heart dove to make a pair, a new orange headed ground thrush female to make a pair with one of the males bred at Chester, a new pair of Salvadori Pheasant which were split to make two unrelated pairs with those already at the zoo and still in quarantine are a new **** and hen blue crowned laughing thrush to make new pairs.

Chris, do you work at Chester? you seem to know quite a lot!

Good news about the Luzons, they haven't bred in a while it's the mindanao bleeding hearts that tend to do better. Are the luzon bleeding hearts still in the end aviary of the top tropical realm area with the green naped pheasant pigeons and Wjite crested turacos? Turacos breeding?

Are the weavers free flight in the tropical realm?

Good news about the pheasants and thrushes too. Expecting baby salvadori's soon!!!

Is any one going to the members day tomorrow?

I will be going. The next one is Tuesday 8th July and the last one is Saturday 8th November.

I sent my form off, I also asked if members are limited to just one Members' Day and I received this reply from Andrea tootell of the Membership office

You may attend any or all of the member’s days; it is not restricted to one.

So it seems that you don't really need a form. You cxould always ask for another one I suppose.
