Chester Zoo Chester zoo - natural vision

i only asked as that was the impression i got from watching the video of the planned heart of africa exibit. i wonder what they have planned?

I wouldn't read too much into that, they also had okapi there as well. There is no way they would let Okapi share an enclosure with an aniaml that would cause it harm.

do you think then that the enclosure will be similar to the ones they have now just all together in a dome? has anybody heard anything about whether the chimps are being moved are a new group brought in?

The exisiting group of chimps are moving, I don't know what will happen to the existing enclosure. I expect it will be redeveloped for some other species.

Well, we can speculate till the forest buffalos come home, but common sense would suggest that they will retain all of the animals in the current collection that would be relevant species in this exhibit.

do you think the zebra, giraffe, rhino etc be placed in one big enclosure?

The east side of the zoo is set to be redeveloped in the Master plan with the Giraffe moving over, however I expect them to be a series of paddocks.

Obviously there will be some mixing happening if that's what you mean though it's just unlikely that the zoo will place everything together.

its just ive noticed in some zoos that they have the rhino, giraffe an zebra together in same exbit along with a few other animals an wondered if chester was thinking of doing the same

From the little bits of plans that have been released I would say no. They would definitely not mix the Black Rhinos with another species.

And the giraffes seem to be having a new enclosure to themselves.

However things change rapidly in zoos and Chester never seem to completely stick to one thing.

I doubt Chester would ever risk mixing the Black Rhino with average numbers of any other species. I believe Port Lympne has succeeded because they are only using a pair of young male rhino (I think San Diego also failed to mix their Black Rhino at the WAP and Disney keep theirs in a seperate pen in their African savannah)

The only way a rhino/hoofstock combo would realistically work was if Chester brought in White Rhino

I doubt that anyone is thinking seriously about the Master Plan until it is clear whether Heart of Africa can get funded and can get Planning permission. If it does go through, the Zoo will be beginning a massive re-birth.

If it doesn't then they'll have to rethink their assumptions.

Other than HOA, all other changes are probably similar to when you look around your house and say "You know, some day we ought to add two bedrooms and another bath." Sure you will...

From what i can gather at least half the money for HOA is in place just waiting for planning permission to be given which is also going according to plan.

I've no doubt that the HoA project will be taken through planning. As I previously posted, the money is in place for this thanks to the NWDA grant. The application has not yet been made so it will be a while before permission is (hopefully) granted.

my next door neighbour is helping with the natural vision building work and he recieved a copy of heart of africa architect plan and there is a question mark by a hippo enclosure

As this project sounds as if it will contain African Rain Forest animals to reflect the true 'heart of africa' maybe they will go for Pygmy Hippos?- also being a much easier species to display than their larger relative.

So how can we all see this???

Bet Okapikpr wants a look.

can you scan and uplode?

I'm pretty sure Chester or the contracting companies will make people sign disclosure agreements to keep the plans secret until the planning permission goes public later this year.

Uploading onto a public site at this stage would be very unwise, unless permission has been granted.
