Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2020

I agree that bushdogs do make and regularly follow paths around their enclosures - but I have always thought of it as a pack behaviour, with each dog following the one in front of it to maintain contact between small animals in a complex forest environment - possibly involving patrolling territory as well. In my experience the dogs rarely show the stereotyped pacing behaviour that can be seen in some big cats and mustelids.

I couldn't agree with this more - Personally, I've seen what I'd consider stereotypic pacing from cats and mustelids mostly (The worst pacing I've ever seen from a species was Tayra). As you've noted, I've also always seen it as more territorial patrolling behaviour, than pacing.

I can back this up as well with Tayra. Each collection I've seen them in I've seen stereotypic behaviour but of course no real tracks as its all been arboreal stereotypic behaviour from what I have witnessed

It's a shame, as they're such a fantastic species to watch. That said, they are incredibly active in general, and seem to be running on caffeine 24/7.
