Chester Zoo Unveils 10 Year Conservation Masterplan:

Chester Zoo reveals 'most ambitious plan in its history' | ITV News

Conservationists at the zoo have identified six key targets to benefit wildlife as the backbone of the plan. They say that by 2031 the zoo will:

1. Preserve options for future conservation for an additional 150 species through conservation breeding and propagation

2. Halt or reverse the decline of 200 highly threatened populations of plants andanimal species in the wild

3. Improve landscapes for wildlife totalling 250,000 hectares

4. Train 5,000 conservationists to deliver positive change for wildlife

5. Empower 10 million people to live more sustainably

6. Influence change in five major policy areas for wildlife

Does anyone know if they will be introducing a new male to their breeding group? I was looking and apparently Magadi moved to Flamingo Land in Malton.

For anyone that doesn't recognise the name, Magadi was the Black rhino breeding bull. Yes he moved to Flamingo Land to be paired eventually with Samira. Hopefully Chester can bring in a new bull but having looked they do appear to be in short supply.

I also believe his daughter named Chanua with Ema Elsa is at Flamingo Land. Is she being released into the wild? I saw a source that said this a while go so I’m wondering if it’s true :)

Yes Chanua is Magadi x Ema Elsa born in 2012. She has been moved abroad i believe in the last 2 weeks in preparation to be released into Africa. She has 2 full sisters one older, Bashira born 2009, who is now a breeding female. Chester's latest calf Kasulu is also a full sister so Chanua being moved to wild is a great for conservation as she's well represented in the breeding programme.

Yes Bashira I believe is the mother of Mandela, who has been released in Africa, Shaya who died in 2017 the same year she was born, and M’Baku in 2019, at Ebeltoft-Ree Safari Park in Denmark ! :)

Chester Zoo was the most-visited Alva member outside London and 6th overall in 2020, despite the lowly (by recent standards) total of 1.18m visitors: Outdoor UK attractions fared better during pandemic

Unsurprisingly, in terms of visitor numbers, outdoor attractions were hit less hard than indoor (though of course running costs are not proportional to how 'outside' you are..!).

A heads up for all that aren't aware - visit bookings are open for members between 12th and 25th April. Suffice to say, they've probably been there a while and I didn't notice; the only days remaining are 20th to 23rd, and no weekend slots are available.

Despite providing my email address at every opportunity, I never seem to get an announcement that stuff like this is happening. grrr!

Visited today, really nice weather and lots of animals out. Here are some updates:
  • Buffy-headed capuchins are back on the monkey islands though they are now on the first one, followed by the lion-tailed macaques and mandrills.
  • The canal island howlers are gone, there is some ring-tailed lemurs there now alongside the black-and-white ruffed lemurs which I believe were already there.
  • There are now dusky pademelons in the old serval/cheetah/muntjac enclosure.
  • The old capuchin island outside the Tropical Realm now has cotton-top tamarins.
  • The Latin American Wetlands aviary isn't open to walk through just yet but the flamingos are back and I also spotted scarlet ibises and black-necked stilts. No sign of other birds like spoonbills yet but I assume they will appear at some point.
  • Not sure if this was announced or not but there is a Philippine spotted deer fawn.
  • There is a horse trailer in the sitatunga paddock, not sure if anything is moving in or leaving.
  • The Javan green magpies are no longer on show it seems, they have been replaced with Sumatran laughingthrush.
  • There is more different birds in the owl aviaries now, Vietnam pheasant are one species but I can't recall the others.
Also a question, has there always been more than 2 species in the lemur walkthrough? Every other time I have been I have only seen ring-tailed and red ruffed but today I also saw crowned lemurs in there.

I will upload some photos from today (such as the wetlands aviary) to the gallery later.

Yep, Crowned have been in there since opening I think. :)

Red-Bellied Lemurs have been (or at least were) signposted for a while too, although I’ve never seen any other than the Ring-Tails and the Red Ruffed out in the walkthrough.

To add to this:
  • It appears that the porcupines are no longer mixed with the meerkats: no sign of them today, and signage has been removed. This may have happened a while back since I don't often frequent the meerkat enclosure, but I don't recall seeing it mentioned here.
  • The species in the Latin American Wetlands aviary also include Southern black-bellied whistling-duck.
  • I didn't see her today, but the Giant Otters in Europe thread notes that a new female Giant Otter has recently been imported (Tibiri, b. 2016 at Singapore) to pair with the lone male.

I think the porcupines have been absent for a little while now.
