Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2021

So are these Sifaka on show yet?

If so, where?

If not, any ideas when?

On show in the non-walkthrough lemur enclosure in Madagascar, as I understand it (the black lemurs having relocated as upthread). :)

Still no sign of the 2020 (or 2019) inventories, but the 2020 report has now appeared on the website and mentions some new Malagasy herp taxa - Reed Frog, Ibity Ground Gecko, Western Girdled Lizard - plus previously unannounced breeding successes including Emei Shan Liocichla, Cabot's Tragopan, Malagasy narrow-striped mongoose, and Montseny Brook Newts. https://cdn.chesterzoo.org/2021/05/Annual-Report-2020.pdf

The 2020 Annual Report was uploaded around a month ago, though as Jennings said, still no 2019 or 2020 animal inventories.

Cotton top tamarin sign is back up, although I didn't manage to see them.
The two Giant otters look to be getting on really well, but I didn't see them outside.

I have just returned from a day and a half at Chester (5th & 6th July). First of all I would like to say what a pleasure it was. As a member I did not need to book in advance or queue up; I just walked up, scanned my membership card and was greeted by the staff member on that entry lane. The zoo was busy on Monday, rather less so today - perhaps because the weather forecast was not good: however I was very lucky with the weather, because although it rained quite heavily on both days as I was driving to the zoo, not a drop fell while I was on the premises. There were a lot of staff on duty, at the entrances to the buildings, supervising the queue for the lemur walk-through, manning the various recycling exhibits (which were not attracting much attention) and talking to visitors at the most popular exhibits - without exception they were as friendly, welcoming and informative as one could wish for. Good show!
I was surprised to see that Lazy River boat ride was running and seemed to be popular. The only closed off areas were the ramp and upper gallery in the Tropical House, plus the aye-aye's corridor, the Bat Cave and Wetland Aviary Hide, plus the children's play zones (although I didn't get round every area of the zoo, so I may have missed some).
I saw everything I particularly wanted to see, including a little tuatara, the Sumatran orang infant (born to Emma last month) and of course, the sifakas. All memorable in their different ways; although I really dislike the removal of the adult tuataras. There were also one or two nice surprises, such as the blue Komodo pit vipers in RotRA, a new tank of rare Goodeids in the Aquarium (Allotoca zacapuensis, Allotoca diazi and Xenotoca doadnoi - none of which I had seen before, plus Characodon audax - which I knew about) and my favourite butterfly barbs have a new tank too. I was also very glad to visit the Monsoon Forest for the first time since the fire: I like the new layout of the 'Tripa Reseach Station' and the tentacled snakes were extraordinarily active today (I have no idea why). The only disappointment was that the Nandus or Asia leaf fish was in hiding both days, but at least it gives me another reason to return.
One piece of interesting news - the male chimps Nicky, Friday and dear old Boris have all had plastic surgery. I didn't see Friday, but Nicky and Boris have had their battered ears worked on. They were together, but separated from the others, to give them a chance to heal - of course they will still see the other chimps in their night dens.
Photos of most of the above, plus some others, to follow.

A minor correction, I now recall a few drops of rain on Monday - but so few that I had quite forgotten about them. I also forgot to mention that the cassowary pair were mixed and seemed to be quite content in each other's company: a volunteer told me that he had been told that they mated on Monday morning - which is interesting (if it's true).

She and Subis are baby-making machines! Does anyone have any more details - date of birth, sex?
The old pair Henry and Anne that lived at Bristol were the founders of this dynasty, mainly through Oscar, their firstborn, who was the father of E & S. They also had two daughters but very few descendents through them.

The Goodeids were on show in March 2020. Like you, three of the species were new for me.

I have photos of this family going back a long way

I will post a photo soon which will reveal more :)

My only visit in 2020 was in October, things in the Aquarium were rather chaotic then, as I wrote at the time. I certainly didn't notice them. This week the tank seemed to be relatively freshly set up and the fishes look like young stock, so they may have reworked the exhibit (as they have done with several other tanks).

Does anyone have a list of all of Subis and Emma’s offspring and where they are currently? It seems they have so many :eek:
