Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2021

Not the first - Bristol's have been in an aviary for some years, just off the top of my head, but it's certainly not the standard yet. I think it will be though.
Of course Bristol do. I can't believe I forgot. I visited not too long ago. That is embarrassing!

Glad you had a good day!

I went on a weekday in the last week before the holidays started (in most places) and was surprised how quiet the place was. Those school holidays have a massive effect. I did make a point of booking a day off work so I could avoid a weekend though..!

The caiman have been there for a few years now - they were the only crocodilians on show for a time when they arrived IIRC (and again while Monsoon Forest was being rebuilt).

I'm assuming the "school trips" which usually populate the zoo at that time of year didn't happen this year. (In past years I've seen 60+ coaches there on a weekday in the run-up to the summer break; my brother used to take 5 or 6 coaches from a single school!)

Islands was very busy as you'd expect but the majority of the species were active. I was really disappointed that the tigers were a no-show. I've visited multiple times but I've never seen the tigers since they moved to islands. The monsoon forest wasn't too busy except for the viewing area for the primates which was rammed and you'd be lucky to get a decent view.

I think this is something they should try to address at some point. It's a fair hike round the tiger section of Islands and though to me it's just the bit between the highlights of the Tree Kangaroo and the Binturongs ( ;) ) to most zoo visitors failing to see any Tigers again will be galling.

There were indeed thankfully few..!

The two days I’ve been I’ve got very active tigers :)

The tigers are probably no-shows almost 70% of the time I visit to be honest. Then again large carnivores at Chester do tend to be no-shows decently often, lions and sun bears are decent but the rest are notorious in not showing up from experience.

I've always been luck then since I went to Chester zoo. And seen all the big carnivores even though the wild dogs were always asleep

Previously I always saw at least one.
Do they still have the 2 females?
I noticed on SLOT feeding the daughter, she seemed very nervous?

I think one of the problems with that enclosure is the limited viewing areas- so you can't really see the whole enclosure and its easier for the tigers to be out of vision. I guess the increased foliage is another difference too.

I always think the Orangutan viewing areas in Monsoon are way too small- one of the most popular species at the zoo and yet there are literally just a few yards of window frontage to the whole indoor enclosure, where they spend more time. Bad design.

Yes, I'm pretty sure.

This is a problem with Monsoon Forest in general I think, the orangs and the gharials are easily the worst offenders though.

Agreed.
I was hoping they'd improve those areas during the post fire refurb.
Re the Tigers, a volunteer told me in 2019, both females spend most time indoors. So although the outdoor area is huge, for some reason they don't seem to feel comfortable out there?

Agreed.

Sumatran Tigers in captivity often seem to have a rather nervous disposition, compared to their larger counterparts Siberians, which temperamentally are a lot more confident, even friendly. That may explain the difference.

Both Jaguars are mixed at the moment, does anyone know if they are able to successfully mate?

Agreed.

The garial exhibit was not affected substantially by the fire: the one-way system reduced congestion at that point (but I don't know if it is still in operation there).
My impression is that they have made limited improvements to the indoor viewing windows for the orangs. I suspect that they did not want to make them much bigger to avoid Emma and Subis sitting as close to the windows as they used to in RotRA.

Aren't they usually mixed? Either way, no, they aren't breeding because if I recall correctly Napo is infertile.
