Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2022

I once invented a new bird species. The Porcupine Quail. I meant to say porcupine quill.:D
Well, there is the Porcupine Caribou - a type of reindeer called as such for its calving grounds at the Porcupine River. I'm somewhat sure that at least a few birds known as 'quail' would inhabit that location ...

Just general question, does anyone know what birds are in the Latin American wetland avairy? They use to have it on their map but now they’ve removed it

Off the top of my head;
Caribbean flamingos
1 hybrid flamingo
Orinoco goose
Brazilian teal
Ringed teal
Muscovy duck
Lake duck
Black bellied whistling duck
Black necked stilts
Scarlet ibis
Puna ibis

Might be missing a couple of waterfowl species

Just curious, what happened to the roseate spoonbill and saffron finches?

While it is too early to jump to conclusions, the fact that a pangolin is on the banner at all suggests that they're at least trying to get them in. I've never seen a pangolin before, so it would be fantastic if they are coming.

No, it doesn't. Look at the banners in the Madagascar area for example. A wide range of malagasy fauna features, not all of which is exhibited, or was ever planned to be. It's just theming.

Unsure. I've not seen either species in there.

This one is new to me, assuming it is a Caribbean/Chilean hybrid? What does it look like? I'd be interested to ID it myself next time I visit.
I've never individually picked it out myself, it just appears on the annual report every year.

Roseate Spoonbills have been removed because they did not settle. They are now offshow and on the surplus list.

Saffron Finches never arrived. I think they would have been lost in such a large exhibit.

The hybrid flamingo was hatched in 1987 when both species were in the same enclosure. I don't know what it looks like. To be honest I've never looked for it.

At the November Members' talk Andrew Owen said there were no plans to add new species to the Latin American aviary. He also said flamingos now rear their own chicks, instead of just rearing chicks from eggs that are returned just before hatching.

Amazing photos of chimpanzee and newborn baby from yesterday or the day before

Fantastic news! This would be the first chimpanzee birth in over two years since Mandy gave birth 21/08/2020.

Chester usually delay announcing the birth until 2-3 weeks later, so hopefully then more details will be shared by the zoo including who the mother is. ZeeZee last gave birth in June 2018, which combined with her age (28 years) makes her a likely candidate imo.

I'm hoping it's vila due to her rough start in the group and in hoping it's a male because the last 4 chimps that were born at the zoo have all been female because we've had tina , stevie , Annie and toyah so hopefully it's a male because correct if I'm wrong wasn't the last male chimp born at the zoo that's still their now is carlos

Shame - I really liked seeing them.

Also... what does "the surplus list" mean? (Please tell me it isn't something chilling.)

It means they are not in the collection's long-term plan and are available to other zoos that might want to take them on.
