Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2022

Fantastic news! This would be the first chimpanzee birth in over two years since Mandy gave birth 21/08/2020.

Chester usually delay announcing the birth until 2-3 weeks later, so hopefully then more details will be shared by the zoo including who the mother is. ZeeZee last gave birth in June 2018, which combined with her age (28 years) makes her a likely candidate imo.
Someone has said it’s zee zee

Thank you for the information bongorob and also does anyone know when the construction for grasslands will start presumably people will have to go through the exit for islands, correct?.

yes, that is correct.

The entrance to Islands is to be moved in the next few months and will transverse the enclosure which previously held bongos and then warthogs. When completed you will have to enter the present 'exit' and then branch to the right to get to the Prevost squirrels. An enclosure will be formed between this path and the back of Manado Street Kitchen and this could possibly house the Philippine Spotted Deer.

Chester have posted an Instagram post highlighting significant births from this year;

Chester Zoo on Instagram: "What a year! We've celebrated lots of important births in 2022 – including the zoo's first ever aardvark calf & fossa pups. Our experts were also the first in the UK to breed Parson's chameleons! Protecting endangered species isn't easy... but it's totally worth it ( swipe for a full gallery! ) #chesterzoo #endangeredspecies #preventingextinction #naturelovers #babyanimals #conservation #wildlifephotography"

Included in this (although not named) is a picture of a zoo-bred juvenile giant magnolia snail, Bertia cambojiensis, a species I don't think has been highlighted previously- a small group have recently gone on display in Tripa field station within monsoon forest.

Great to see the inverts getting some appreciation, especially a species like this which I have never heard of!

I have a visit to Chester Zoo arranged for the middle of May, if this redevelopment is still being done by then it would be a shame if Islands is closed off as a result, because it was one of the areas I missed on my last visit.

Islands isn't due to be closed at any point due to the works, I don't think. Should be able to use the current entrance path until the new one is ready.

The striped grass mice went on show early in December (prior to the 11th), I forgot they hadn't been mentioned here.

Quick update I'm here now and the first change I've noticed is that barbery striped grass mouse are onshow in fruit bat forest
Nice to see these come back! Are the spiny mice still in there too? That was what was present on my last visit in September.
