In 1974 when Chester received 5 Mitchell's Lorikeets they were quite common. It is sad that Chester Zoo now has more Mitchell's Lorikeets than there in the wild.

I think I prefer 'Lulu'...

Lumi feels like a "more unique" name than Lulu because it has meaning, whereas Lulu is just a normal and common name for animals.

I used to keep White Crested Laughing Thrush many years ago but haven't seen any for sometime .Do you know of any other collections that keep them?

I was amazed at just how loud they are though.

Marwell has 3 species of laughing-thrush, of which I think it is Red-tailed that lives close to the Marwell Hall.
Though what's funny is that for what few times I have been round that enclosure over the years, I don't recall ever seeing them...

Looking forward to going to Chester in 2024 now in hope of seeing the white crested laughing thrush - love all the thrushes they are great to watch and listen to! Realised I’ve missed seeing them at Thrigby on a couple of visits this year (zootierliste suggests they are there) so that’s another chance I guess.

Currently they are housed in the owl aviaries with the Satyr Tragopans.

Incidentally although called Laughing Thrushes they are in a different family from the true Thrushes.

Zootierlist shows 9 collectons keeping them. In the UK Birdworld (Farnham), Chester and Thrigby Hall.

I was amazed at just how loud they are though.

I also used to breed Nanday Conures,they were really loud, especially when they had chick's. As soon as they saw someone they would start, I had to find away of sneaking past their aviary.
