Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2023

Apologies if this has been answered already.
I’ve seen that the Bongos, who aren’t included in the heart of Africa expansion are being re-homed near the Okapis, is there any news on if the Sitatunga are staying at the zoo or if they’re leaving the collection?

I spent today at Chester Zoo. I got there at 10.30
having been held up by a really bad crash on the M6 on the opposite side, hope everyone okay, but there looked fatalities for sure.

Spent near enough 6 hours at the Tiger exhibit, as the cubs are starting to come out. Just after 4.30pm, the wait was rewarded when for a couple of minutes they interacted with Kasarna and also came out the Bamboo at the back of the exhibit.

Kasarna is not keen to allow Dash too close and he went to see them twice today and she really protected them, lunging at Dash on both occasions and he was quick to back down.
When Dash is around, she doesn’t leave them for long. Hope to get better pictures next week, but
the 6 hour wait paid off a little.

Few of Dash and Kasarna as well. More in gallery.

I have similar photos (apart from the quality) you'd think I'd been stood in the same spot as you for all that time :D;)
She did bring them out for a short time just before 5 o'clock
Thanks for helping pass the time and hope your journey back was less eventful :)DSC09079.JPG DSC09056.JPG DSC08796.JPG DSC09004.JPG DSC08913.JPG

Oh no how sad. Do u know why she died?
I did ask the attendant in the Madagascar section if he knew, but he said that he hadn't been told - although the keepers probably knew. Someone here may be better informed. It is not unusual for things to wrong with first-time parents.

Does anyone know what happened to the capybaras? Noticed recently there now appears to be only 4, two adults and 2 youngsters.

I don't know, there could be several reasons.

specimens have died.
specimens have been exported.
specimens were indoors.
specimens were outdoors but were unseen.
specimens temporarily removed for management reasons, e.g. veterinary treatment.

Yeah I understand that. That’s why I asked here to see if anyone knew specifically what had happened to the other adult and youngster that have been present until recently.

Zoo receives funding for Grasslands project:

Funding supports multi-million-pound Chester Zoo Grasslands - Place North West

An African species zone and 63-bed lodge-style hotel are due to open to the public in spring 2025, following a green loan from Santander.

Chester Zoo has received a funding package, made up of a green loan and revolving credit facility, to support the multi-million-pound Grassland project

Another thoroughly enjoyable day at Chester watching the Sumatran Tiger Cubs, Alif and Raya.

They are starting to be more confident and put on a great show yesterday, pouncing and bouncing and playing with mum Kasarna.

Kasarna was still very reluctant to let Dash too close, but he watched on from afar, having been put in his place previously by Kasarna.

An absolutely packed Chester Zoo (into car park 4 by 10.30am), it amazed me, just how impatient people are when it comes to the Tigers, not wanting to wait to get a glimpse of the cubs.

Another 6 hours spent, but definitely worth it, as these photos will show. More on the gallery.

Just before leaving, I headed back through islands and via the Tree Kangaroo, where I got to see the Joey’s head for the first time and watched it munching away on browse. Totally adorable.

Chester will obviously be packed over Easter, and that’s it now for me, until after the school holidays, but a really enjoyable day.

Brilliant photos. I've been a couple of times but not seen them. Maybe I don't have your patience.

Did you go past the anteaters on the way to islands as they have ropes and planters keeping you back from the anteater viewing window. It has been like this for 2 weeks and last time they did this it was for the aardvark (Dobie). Maybe I am just being a little hopeful.

I did walk past, but can't say I noticed! My eyes are normally looking the other side for Tapirs

There is some minor restoration work being carried out, nothing major.

Who is the new jaguar in with Napo ? What is it's name, sex and age ? Which zoo did it arrive from ? Thank you.
Where did you hear about a new jaguar? As far as I'm aware nothing has been announced by the zoo and I doubt a new jaguar would go unnoticed...

New Jaguar ?

I mean even if they had got one, I doubt it would be integrated so quickly ?

A visitor posted 18h ago some photos of CZ on FB under visitor posts - he is called John Grech - there's a photo with 2 jags- the one on right looks like Napo . I was at the zoo on Thurs but didn't have time to see Napo. Can you solve the mystery ??
