Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2024

If you mean Heart of Africa it is Rothschild's Giraffe (breeding herd and bachelor herd), Ostrich, Grevy's zebra, Mongoose, Cape Porcupine, Kirk's Dik-Dik, Hooded Vulture, African White-backed Vulture, White-headed Vulture, Meerkat, Lovebird, Greater Flamingo, Roan Antelope, Aardvark, Cape Hyrax, Red Spitting Cobra, Milky Eagle Owl and others I can't remember at the moment. Most species are already at the zoo.

Wow that's incredible. So are they no longer going to house scimitar horned oryx?

Where will the bongo, blesbok and sitatunga be housed?

I'm not sure how reliable this link is, because I can see no connection to Chester on it,as a result until it's confirmed by the zoo I wouldn't take this as being gospel, that said it could be true or it could be wishful thinking because she has been run with the bull.
You are right in that it is maybe best to not take this as gospel without an official announcement from the zoo, but I think it is quite likely to be true and I would be very surprised if Sundara is not pregnant and due to give birth in the first half of 2025 considering that I was told Aung Bo's move would be prepared once Sundara was confirmed pregnant (he was announced to be leaving back in September). Especially as I would view that website as fairly trustworthy, I would say that it's probably more than wishful thinking.

Aung Bo could be being moved for other reasons than he has the cows pregnant,it could be related to how one of his tusks got broken,we would just be speculating but from what I've seen of this site it loves a good bit of speculation when it doesn't know the facts, no I don't know why Aung Bo is leaving to speculate why without the zoo confirming would be wrong to do. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that the internet isn't always right in what is posted on it.

This link mentions that their Asian Elephant “Sundara” is pregnant and due in 2025.

Chester has a history of keeping elephant pregnancies quiet(I like it) so apart from the obvious reasons, I always find it exciting when they announce on socials that a calf has been born. The above article is potentially correct however I'll wait until Chester announce the birth
We all know anything can go wrong even upto & during the birth, so waiting until the first 24 hours are over is never a bad thing. Sundara's last calf was 4yrs in February so she would be due this year if history repeats itself

Aung Bo will have to move on eventually and as Indali will be 8 in December, there is a risk that she may mate with her father. So I would expect that the move will happen sooner rather than later, provided that Sundara is known to be pregnant. I would not be surprised if the zoo then waits for a year or two before bringing in another bull so that Indali can mature. I think that Sundara may be such a small cow because she had her first calf (Hari) before she was 9 years old.

Bit of a random one but do elephants commonly mate with offspring in the wild? Obviously Asian elephants come together for breeding but I was wondering if it happens in wild animals or whether sheer numbers / ranges / distance bulls travel or cow politics in terms of dominant females etc prevent it in native habitats.

Just to be clear I am not remotely suggesting it is desired in captive animals or shouldn’t be managed to prevent it.

I wondered whether it is captivity in itself that creates the conditions for inbreeding, or whether it is wild behaviour kept in check by the differences in how wild animals range and how they live apart from each other etc which we then manage by moving elephants to new locations between collections.

Sundara’s first calf was by her own father, Upali so it already happened.

no issues have occurred that I am aware of by this mating at Chester and other zoos, especially Ramat Gan. It just doesn’t help with the genetic diversity.

Is it true that Alice the chimpanzee's baby died in march ? saw a youtuber comment on it but did not see any announcement

2023 annual report is now available 2023 annual report | Chester Zoo

I find it difficult to read.
Yes not set up for phone or PC screen reading.

Main points visitor numbers back to pre pandemic levels and late 2028 for phase 3 of zoo masterplan (African forrest) don't know if that means announcing or work starting or opening, I'd guess starting construction

I'd recommend hitting the 'download' button (just left of the 'search' magnifying glass in the bottom-right corner) - this downloads a standard PDF that is much more user-friendly..!
