Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2024

I went to Chester yesterday, the weather was better than I expected, just a bit of rain around oneish. The zoo was not busy apart from lots of school parties, many of the age group which I don't like, under 10s. They just run around nosily, get in people's way and probably scare some of the animals into hiding for the rest of the day.

I was surprised to have my bag searched. Good luck with this policy in July and August when there are thousands of visitors a day. It seems to be a waste of time.

The female Great Indian Hornbill in Elephants is in the nesting log and was being fed by the male. The aviary outside now has Cabot's Tragopans.

Mitchell's Lorikeets were in a holding aviary in the Bali walk-through.

A photographer was stationed outside the exit to Monsoon Forest. No one semed to want a picture.

The old Phillipine Spotted Deer enclosure is empty.

Spectacled Owls are back in their aviary and Spectacled Bears are still labelled at their usual enclosure.

In RORA the tree monitor viv has a label calling it Blue Tree Monitor, but all I saw was a nice big locust. Mangrove Snake viv was empty. Couldn't see into the others because of the amount of children in the house, but since they seemed to be looking at things, I assume everything else is still in there, except for the Malayan Giant Katydids.

Again failed to see the Asian Giant Toads (also Mountain Chicken Frogs). Since these two species are permanent no shows, I have my doubts if they are actually in their respective vivs.

In Dragons In Danger I did not see the baby Komodos, but I've seen others in the past, so not a problem. Madagascan Blue Stick Insect viv is empty again, but there are some in butterflies along with the very impressive Violet-winged Grasshoppers.

I did see a Siamese White-crested Laughing Thrush for the first time.

The Malawi Cichlids are in the aquarium and the Okapi House.

He asked people if they wanted a photo, there used to be one by the zoo entrance a few years ago. I suppose some people want to buy them.

Went today. Grasslands is coming on well. You can pretty much see the giraffe house and field from the entrance to islands.

The jewel wasps were great, got to watch them dragging the cockroaches around and when we came back later on the cockroaches were in test tubes blocked in by stones. The wasps sting them, trap them then let their young eat them alive.

Also enjoyed seeing the baby Komodo Dragon on display opposite the adults and the young sifaka. Saw Inka the black jaguar for the first time. She was outside to begin with and Napo the male inside but they got swapped for feeding just after lunch. Heard a volunteer say they hope to introduce them.

Snow Leopard enclosure looks great. If I had to describe it I'd say the one at Banham multiplied by two. Can't wait to see them there.

Lima is now in the back paddock for the spectacled bears. Bernie was indoor at spirit of the jaguar.

Again failed to see the Asian Giant Toads (also Mountain Chicken Frogs). Since these two species are permanent no shows, I have my doubts if they are actually in their respective vivs.
Can confirm both enclosures are still occupied by their respective species, and there is also a large Phrynoidis mixed with the mountain chickens in Dragons in Danger.

I must just be unlucky. I've had species I had trouble in seeing before both at Chester and other zoos. It seems that once I get to see them I never fail to do so afterwards.

I have put this in the other Chester thread but I thought I’d add it here with this being the actual news thread. The Andean bears are currently set up like this:
Bernie - outdoor SOTJ
Lima - indoor SOTJ
Obe (I think) - semi-offshow bear enclosure
Pacha (I think) - main bear enclosure

I’m not 100% sure on who was who in the main bear enclosures today but the 2 were definitely separated.

So Bernie will leave and Chester will keep a trio of 1.2 (females being mother and daughter?) from now on- is that correct?

Zootierliste has an entry for Snow Leopard for Chester Zoo. Looks like they have arrived, or one at least.
Or someone getting ahead of themselves, as was the case with London's Ostrich last year for whom a listing was added several months before their arrival. ;) The listing in question doesn't even have a source, which does make it suspicious, although I would be happy to be proven wrong.

It is possible they have arrived, the enclosure looked very nearly ready last week and work was taking place on a weekend, maybe trying to soft open the enclosure in time for half term

Could they not have arrived, so they can settle in already? Just thinking out loud, I'm obviously not familiar with how long such period would take before actually being able to be seen by the public.

I am not all too familiar with the plans for Chester's future, but is the hunting dogs moving into the cheetah enclosure and the cheetah moving near the Oakfield (former Bush Dog enclosure if I am not mistaken) only a temporary move while the dogs' enclosure is under redevelopment for Heart of Africa, or is it a permanent move?

The hunting dogs is a temporary move. Their enclosure is not being modified but they have been moved because of all the construction work around it.
