Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2024

Visited Chester today.

Giraffe House was closed, presumably beacuse they have a baby.

Butterfiles was closed.

Oakfield Lawn, Rockery and Roman Garden area was closed. Looks like a Snow Leopard (or two) is/are at Chester.

The owls and Asian birds in the old owl aviaires all have new labels.

Finally saw an Asian Giant Toad, and I forgot to put my camera battery in after charging it last night, so no photograph; I'll probably never see one again.

The snow leopard from Krefeld has indeed arrived, it left Krefeld on March 11.

Didn’t go in any of the indoor exhibits so didn’t see the snake never seem to have time to visit a lot of the zoo, I’m normally watching either the big cats or the Lemurs
Wonder if I did bump into any zoochatters though had some nice chats with people yesterday, I’m one of the guys with a big lens

I did not speak to anyone yesterday, but I did see several people with long lenses, so maybe we passed each other. However I didn't go into Lions or Lemurs yesterday.

What sort of 'big lens'?
The 300 mm lens I have at home works perfectly well for zoo trips. But if I am going on a truly 'wild' outing then I have a 400 mm lens as well. And with the crop zoom of the camera body its effective focal length becomes 600 mm

Mines a 300mm it’s an F 2.8
I do have extenders for it but as you say 300 is perfect for the zoo

Giraffe House was open today with a new arrival. Keeper said it was born on 10/3/24. It was born to Orla; all the remaining females are on contraception.

It's just been announced on the zoo's Facebook page that the snow leopard enclosure is opening on 25th March, and the leopard's names are Yashin and Nubra.

With this in mind, I'll probably arrange a visit to Chester when I'm off work in October, but only go around half the zoo (the green and blue portions of the map) and go around the other half on a separate visit once Heart of Africa opens.

Hi, I’m supposed to be going on a trip to Chester tomorrow with uni- having least been in July. Have there been any developments since July that people recommend checking out?

Last July is a long time for me to remember but here goes.

New enclosure for Philippine Spotted Deer at the entrance to Islands.

Baby Komodo Dragon, Rothschild's Giraffe, Bornean Orang Utan, Eastern Black Rhino and Western Chimpanzee I think.

Oustalet's Chameleons and Imbabura Tree Frogs in Tropical Realm.

Mitchell's Lorikeets in Bali aviary.

Siamese Sumatran Laughingthrush in the old owl aviaires.

Blue-tailed Tree Monitor and Taiwan Beauty Snake in Realm of the Red Ape.

Native Wildlife Exhibition in the old Orang Utan house.

Unfortunately you are a few days to early to see the snow leopard exhibit.

Thank you so much, that’s really helpful.
