Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2024

Oh right. I did see the 'cinnamon frogs' in the Monsoon Forest. Hadn't realised they were mislabelled. Does that mean the the cinnamon frogs are offshow as the yellow spotted tree toads now occupy their vivarium?

There's cinnamon frogs (Nyctixalus pictus) in Monsoon Forest, and there's Bornean splash frogs/ Bornean rock frogs (Staurois parvus) in RoRA.

Where are the Cinnamon Frogs? They're no longer signed in the large viv at the end of the Research Station section - and that now houses Yellow Spotted Tree Toads anyway - and the small viv they are signed in @bongorob has already said actually contains Bornean Rock Frogs and they've just not changed the signage yet.

It doesn't contain rock frogs, it contains cinnamon frogs.

Thanks for clearing that up Swampy. My mistake, the one I saw on my last visit looked like a rock frog, it was a very dark specimen.

New species for the zoo is South African Spiny Mouse (Acomys spinossimus) and a species returning is Celestial Pearl or Galaxy Danio (Danio margaritatus)

I wonder if the South African spiny mouse will be held in Grasslands or perhaps in one of the small enclosures near the entrance in Fruit Bat Forest

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but a pair of Grey-Cheeked/Omei Shan Liocichlas have been transfered to Battersea Zoo from Chester.
Does anyone know how many individuals Chester has left (and onshow), as their one of my favs and I really enjoy spending time with them.

Elephant Sundara Hi Way and her unborn calf passed away on Friday 19th July. The rapid and unexpected decline was due to twisted intestines.
Here is the article from Chester’s Website, may she rest in peace.
Sundara Hi Way | Chester Zoo

“Both Animal care and veterinary teams rushed to help her but, despite doing everything they could to try and treat her, Sundara deteriorated rapidly and very sadly passed away.

An examination has since taken place to help us understand the exact cause of the unexpected loss of Sundara. It has revealed that she had twisted intestines.

This complication can occur in a range of mammals, for example it is sometimes seen in horses. It can onset very quickly and is almost impossible to diagnose or treat in elephants.”

Very, very tragic news. Chester really has had the worst luck when it's come to their elephant herd. It's devastating to lose an elephant so young, and the fact she was pregnant too is awful.

My thoughts are with the staff who haven't managed to catch a break at all. And fingers crossed the other four, especially her two young daughters are doing well. I'm hoping Maya will stand up and serve as a guiding figure for the younger three going forward. Hopefully all turns out well on that front.

This has also a spanner in the works regarding acquiring a bull too as they'd have to wait years now before Indali fully matures into a matriarchal role (assuming Maya doesn't). They're really at a crossroads; acquiring additional, mature females is probably unlikely as it isn't recommended to mix matrilines these days.

Why would they have to wait getting a new bull? Indali is almost 8 and at the perfect age to get pregnant with her first baby. Which is badly needed now after this horrible loss.
