Chester Zoo Chester Zoo news 2025

It's been confirmed on the FB group page that he was put to sleep yesterday, devastating considering he was their last lion but I can imagine they'll be wanting to get a new pride.
It was to be expected that the elderly Asiatic lion was sooner rather than later ... going to meet its maker! It will be interesting to see what happens next with Asiatic lions here as well as the species in general in the UK?

I’m sure they’ll get more as it was an enclosure built for them

I used to love hearing the distant Lion roars while walking around other parts of the zoo.

There is a recording of lions roaring in Heart of Africa.

A female was born in 2013 but not reared,

My daughter saw this on a photo fan page
Really sad that they have all gone now, will miss them. I hope when the next pride settles in we can hope for some cubs in a few years.

Did the group ever produce any offspring? I seem to recall an episode of SLOTZ where the keepers stated Iblis was a very nervous male
Unfortunately not.

So the zoo has said they will be getting a new pride of Asiatic lions. Not sure if this would be an existing group relocated or will it be individuals introduced together? Any ideas from those in the know about the Asiatic lion population in U.K. or Europe ?

Have the London cubs moved yet?

No, they haven't. There's a good chance Chester could end up receiving either the two males, or the female.
According to media reports, Chester will be receiving two Lions from separate facilities in the coming months to form a new breeding pair. Therefore, if one half of the breeding pair is arriving from London, there's a good chance it could be the young female.

Heard a brief, brilliant news item on the radio. Breakthrough research for vaccine for Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus, using adult Elephants at Chester Zoo. It was found to be safe and crucially activated the immune system that fights viruses....sorry that is all that heard

Media release on EEHV vaccine:

We’ve developed the world’s first elephant virus vaccine | Chester Zoo

Dr Tanja Maehr, from the Animal and Plant Health Agency, a lead author of the study and a former Chester Zoo Conservation Scholar, said:

“Our findings give real hope that vaccination can become a practical tool for preventing severe disease and death due to EEHV. The next step could be to trial the vaccine in more calves and in range countries so we can begin to protect those most at risk.”
