Chester Zoo Chester Zoo news 2025

If Indali was treated in 2019, does that mean she was saved using some other strain/type of vaccine? The article says this new one was first trialled in 2021, two years later.

This was the treatment protocol for Indali in 2019:

Chester Zoo elephant calf's EEHV survival 'momentous' - BBC News

Across a two-week period, Indali had nine anaesthetic procedures, blood plasma transfusions, interferon therapy, anti-viral medications and immune boosting treatments, as well as very large amounts of intravenous fluids.

A vaccine is effective as a preventative measure, but not as a treatment once the virus has taken hold.

I would add to this that her odds of survival were greatly enhanced by early detection.

It doesn’t work like that. I think all adult elephants carry it, and all juveniles become susceptible
Yes, all elephants are carrier's from EEHV, in adults it lies dormant as they have the necessary antibodies, in Asian elephant calves and adolescents anywhere from 1-13 years old are susceptible to the virus, and in African elephants older adolescents ages 12-15 are able to be affected by the virus, though are able to fight off the virus successfully.

With all the issues with bringing in bloodlines from abroad due to the extra red tape since Brexit.
Would there be a possibility of adding to the collection @ Chester Zoo from Axe Valley?

i'm thinking more of the small carnivore collection they have at Axe Valley and some of these are not widely found in British Collections.

Caracal
Lynx
Fishing Cat
Jaguarundi
Serval

Must admit I'm unaware of the ages, sex and how well represented they are in the UK breeding programs.

then they have Civet, Binturong.

What species of Zebra are they holding?

The zebras are Burchell's. I'm sure Chester could accommodate some of the small cats etc, although probably off-show, at least initially. I hope to visit Axe Valley this week, but I don't know if I can learn anything about the plans for their livestock.

I know a while ago many people wanted Serval to be a part of the heart of Africa so there possible

Jaguarundi could be possible as there rare in collection but in all honesty I don’t know where they would put any of them especially considering that Chester is doing a lot of big renovations and projects in the past and coming years

I feel small cats are massively under represented at Chester and would be such a welcome addition to the collection. Serval or caracal are an obvious choice for phase 2 of Heart of Africa with space already available next to vultures.

There’s also room for small cats in islands - I’d love to see clouded leopards or fishing cats and they could have an incredible wooded exhibit on the entrance path where the current prevost squirrels are located (and their enclosure could be moved further along the pathway).

Just announced, copied off social media.

Our secret is OUT

Not one, not two, not three… but FOUR fossa pups have been born! and this is their very first health check up

We won’t judge you for replaying this over and over… (who could say no to those faces!)

Just seen a video on FB of movement in the pouch of the tree kangaroo. Exiting news if there’s a 2nd joey soon to be visible.

And new Bornean orang born today too according to FB photos.

Quite the baby boom lately!

On a side note noticed one of the Sumatran orangs looked very heavily pregnant recently. She had very enlarged breasts compared to usual so possibly another orang baby on the cards. And it’s been a few years since we had a new Sumatran so based on previous reproductive history there is to be one expected.

Exciting times.

That's exciting news about both the Bornean's and the Sumatrans.

The Bornean infant I would assume has been born to Leia, who last gave birth to Dot back in 2020. This should give Chester now eight Borneans; Tuan, Willie, Sarikei, Leia, Tombol, Dot, Myrtle and this young infant.

I had thought they had halted the Sumatran breeding program; both breeding females are now in their late 30's too. From recent videos Emma has slightly enlarged breasts (but that's normal for her). But it would be great news if either are pregnant.

Would be really nice to see small cats at Chester, not sure why they don’t have them, surely some of the species need conservation as well , they are however part of the breeding programme for Scottish Wildcats , this is done offshow as the cats are released into the wild
