Chester Zoo Project - Help Wanted

Water Dragon

Well-Known Member
Recently I have been doing a project on Chester Zoo and I have been doing some very intense research on where each species is located. Despite all of the research that I have been doing, I am still unable to locate a few species. If anyone could say where about the following species are, it will be deeply appreciated. I have omitted invertebrates (for now) as I have not quite finished that area. If a species is no longer held at the zoo then please state where it was before it left.

Bell's forest dragon
Collared grosbeak
Emei Shan liocichla
European harvest mouse
Malabar danio
Mindanao lorikeet
Mount Omei liocichla
Ornate ctenopoma
Pikehead
Poll's synodontis
Rainbow shiner
Red arc pencilfish
Redeye Tetra
Red-tailed laughingthrush
Red-winged starling
Reticulated corydoras
Rhinoceros snake
Rummy-nose tetra
Salvadori's pheasant
Sarasins minnow
Siberian sturgeon
Snakehead betta
Snowflake moray
Socorro dove
Spotfin betta
Sterba's corydoras
Temminck's Bristlenosed catfish
Temminck's tragopan
Three-lined rasbora
Toba betta
Tonkin bug-eyed frog
Tramlap flying frog
Tufted pochard
Two spot barb
Violet turaco
Whitemargin betta
Zhou's box turtle

Also, are there really water voles in the reed bed or have I just misread that sign?
Does anyone have a species list for the aquarium in SoJ?
And finally, are the Denison barbs still at the zoo because they are still on the website but I have not seen or heard of them for a while?

Wow, Thank you MagpieGoose! This is a big help to my project! :):):)

Also one other thing I would like to mention, I was doing some further research and found that apparently there are sturgeons in the pond in Sunken Garden. Could this be the Siberian sturgeons?

Thanks Swampy! I didn't know that! Now I have another species to add to the project! ;)
Aren't the tragopans in the bush dog aviary Cabot's Tragopans? At least that is what was in there last I heard.

They are indeed sorry- Chester no longer hold Temminck's Tragopan

Are the tetra and pencilfish not still on display in the SotJ aquarium?

It's probably helpful to clear up a few synonyms here.

Temminck's Bristlenosed catfish = Ancistrus species, plenty in the Aquarium, but I don't believe any identifications at the species level in this genus
Three-lined rasbora = scissortail, nearly zillion in turtle & Tomistoma pools, Monsoon Forest
Tufted pochard = tufted duck (there are often wild birds on the Monkey House moat)

I presume that the list of species is derived from Zootierliste and you will realise that some of these listings will almost certainly be out of date or unreliable for other reasons.

I don't think these species ever have been there, the tetras are African and the pencilfish are too small.

It did come from ZT but also from the stocklist as well. I am sure that most of the species that I put up there came from ZT.
PS: the tragopan aviary is one of my favourites as well. ;)

Neither rummnynose tetra or redeye tetra are African (presuming water dragon is referring to Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae and not Arnoldichthys spliopterus- another reason just posting a list of common names from ZTL can cause confusion) I'm sure I recall seeing both in that aquarium before. You may be right about the pencilfish.

Tonkin bug-eyed frog
More commonly referred to as Vietnamese Mossy Frog or simply mossy frog.

Temminck's Tragopan, Collared Grosbeak and Red-Tailed Laughingthrush are all now in the new Rainbow aviaries.

Red-Eyed Tetra and Giant Pencilfish are both labelled but neither me or ShonenJake13 saw any

The labelling on that aquarium has never, ever been correct! I am afraid that I am now extremely sceptical of all laminated labels tied up with strings at Chester Zoo. They are definitely not ♫ My Favourite Things ♫.
As Swampy has said red-eyed tetra is an ambiguous name (or even an amtriguous name). The giant pencilfish is usually the common name for Anostomus anostomus, which is around 15cm long with black and yellow stripes. Those particular labels may have been correct once upon a time, but I don't recall seeing any of those species recently. Incidentally the red-arc pencilfish is Nanostomus mortonthaleri (if I remember correctly) which is unmistakable, 1.5cm long with black and scarlet stripes.

Ok, so I have now got the invertebrate species list all sorted out so here are the ones that I was unable to identify the location of. Once again if they have left the zoo please let me know where they were originally:

Asian forest scorpion (Heterometrus longimanus)
Singapore blue tarantula (Lampropelma violaceopes)
Brazilian salmon tarantula (Lasiodora parahybana)
Indian social spider (Stegodyphus sarasinorum)
Bamboo shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis)
Shrimp (Caridina)
Mosquito Shrimp (Caridina gracilirostris)
Blue leg poso (Caridina caerulea)
Cardinal shrimp (Caridina dennerli)
Red Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina)
Green lace shrimp (Atyoida pilipes)
Bernhard’s hermit crab (Pagurus bernhardus)
American cockroach (Periplaneta americana)
Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa)
Pink orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus)
Florida Leaf Katydid (Stilpnochlora couloniana)
Cricket (Homoeogryllus xanthographus)
Sabah thorny stick insect (Aretaon asperrimus)
Walkingstick (Epidares nolimetangere)
Giant stick insect (Eurycantha calcarata)
Giant walkingstick (Pharnacia ponderosa)
Walkingstick (Phobaeticus magnus)
Walkingstick (Ramulus)
Walkingstick (Myronides)
Giant stick insect (Phasma gigas)
Atlas beetle (Chalcosoma caucasus)
Beetle (Mecynorrhina ugandensis)
Emerald cockroach wasp (Ampulex compressa)

Note: This is taken from the 2015 annual stocklist so I understand a few may have left the zoo. I also understand that it may be quite difficult so I don't blame you if you struggle with it. All I can say is do the ones that you know and the best that you can do. All help is very appreciated.

Brazilian Salmon Tarantula, Madagascar Hissing Cockroach and Florida Leaf Katydid are all on-show in Butterfly Journey

Does anyone know what birds are in the owl aviaries at the moment?
Great Grey Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Great-Gray Owl, Ural Owl, Northern White-Faced Owl, Brown Wood Owl and Spectacled Owl. Red-Billed Blue Magpie are still labelled but I think the individual is now back in the Nissin Hut
