She said a good 12 months for Madagascar.
I also forgot to mention the elephants were all inside. Maya was at the front of the house and the hi way family were at the back. There was an elephant in the bull pen however it didn’t have tusks which has confused me a bit because of aung bo’s very prominent tusks so if anyone’s knows anything.

Since they moved to their new enclosure I see so little of Milli, yet always see Toni. A number of other people I have heard from recently have also only seen him and not her. It always used to be the other way around!

Yes, when I was there earlier this week I only saw Toni.
 
I don't believe the zoo announced it, but the first clutch of blue-crowned hanging parrot (Loriculus galgulus) fledged in late 2017, the first bird emerging from the nest on the 29th November. I've put a photo in the gallery of the second fledgling, which emerged the following day:

The zoo seem to announce nothing that is not a cuddly, fluffy species. Or a play area. Great news about the parrots, I heard they had eggs late last year.

Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot is a first breeding for Chester.

Chester was the first UK zoo to breed Loriculus. In 1959 4 chicks were hatched by a male blue-crowned hanging parrot (Loriculus galgulus) and a female Ceylon Hanging Parrot (Loriculus beryllianus), of which 2 were reared. The next breeding of hanging parrots was not until 2017.
 
Visited today on a very cold adopter day (my wife adopted an Okapi) it appears we are now only 6 weeks away from a new baby Okapi bringing the total to 5 briefly before one of the males is due to be exported.

Also leaving next week is a male Capybara who is currently in pre-export quarentine in the South American Tapier paddock opposite the rest of the group.

The Onegar paddock is also currently in quarantine following the arrival of a new female around 3 weeks ago with another Onegar now heavily pregnant.

In the brief Q&A with the keeper who was the assistant section leader and Okapi specialist I believe was discussing the future of the Giraffe house and its demolition to make way for a new Congo themed area also incorporating the Congo Buffalo meaning the old Cattle house will finally be demolished. I wonder what other Congo species they plan to exhibit.

The Asian Short Clawed Otters are now in the Orang side of the enclosure whilst they raise another litter of pups that are around 12 days old.

Another scheduled departure in the coming weeks is a pair of Pudu the offspring of the current breeding pair.

Only other point of interest from our visit was a Fruit Bat who tried to make a break for it managing to make it through to the hand wash area, we were held up in the Fruit Bat Forrest for around 10 minutes whilst keepers tried to tempt it back in.

To my knowledge the current group of mainly PTV Chimps wouldn’t really fit in a specific Congo area. Not coming specially from that particular country in Africa.
 
The plan is for the zoo to work with Pan troglodytes verus. The bongo will go into the forest zone, but they are East African bongo, unless you follow Groves who says there are no subspecies :D

There will be more than just chimps, gorillas, congo buffalo and pygmy hippos. Colobus moneys for instance. Possibly African grey parrot.

I would hope they stick in a representative portion of forest birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish too.
 
They could always add some of the surplus Tsavo birds and the Tropical realm Emerald starling to the mix

Newquay of course have been breeding Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots for a while now
