Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Reports 2018

Saw a Pallas Cat in the back of the enclosure today - and even more excitingly, there is now a (rather scruffy) Collared Trogon (Trogon collaris) on show in the Tropical Realm, next to the scops owls - there are none of this species listed on Zootierliste currently so as far as I'm aware they're not on show anywhere else in Europe.

The Belted Ruffed Lemurs are now labelled in the original ruffed lemur enclosure opposite the cheetahs and alongside the howler monkeys - hessian over the windows still so didn't see them.

Pallas cat if u can. Also could u try and find out why Bernie the Andean bear is still in SOTJ

May now have to visit again does anyone know when or if the enforced closure of some bird walk throughs have stopped or will be stopping?

As of yesterday the restrictions were still in place - the cranes and flamingos were contained in temporary enclosed spaces, the Tsavo, Bali and new Islands walkthroughs were all closed, the cassowaries were off-show and there are disinfectant pads at the entrances of the Tropical Realm and Monsoon Forest.

A few photos now in the gallery, including the cat and what I could get of the trogon before it disappeared to the back of the aviary and stayed there..!

why haven't they put disinfectant mats at the entrances to the walk through aviaries?

Because they're closed completely. ;)

Sorry, being a wag. I guess it's just not thought to be worth the risk.

Thanks for this interesting info - great to know that the Pallas Cats are visible then! Can someone remind me whereabouts their enclosure is, its somewhere up near the Bush Dogs isn't it?

Slightly surprised that the Belted Lemurs have been moved - possibly the mix with the Ring Tails wasn't working?

Yes - the Pallas Cats are in (holding enclosures at the rear of) the old cheetah/cassowary enclosures in the corner near the old pedestrian entrance (opposite the pademelons/old kangaroo paddock).

2 new bird species on-show in the free-flight area of the Monsoon Forest; Scaly-breasted Bulbul (Pycnonotus squamatus) and Black-browed Barbet (Psilopogon oorti).
I may be visiting later today so I will try and get pictures.

Both of which comprise lifetick species for myself, and the latter of which is the only known holding in Europe.

Info from todays visit.

Secret World of the Okapi closed for maintenance.
Lots of Madagascar fody in Tropical Realm, are they new?
Construction outside Spirit of the Jaguar connecting to the sloth enclosure, maybe this is a house for agoutis?
Construction of the Madagascar area is advancing, there are now some buildings.

If anyone has question I only visited the East Zoo today.

Red fody? If so perhaps they’ve had a good breeding season?

Did you manage to see the Pallas Cats by any chance, and has there been any progress in terms of them going on show properly?
