Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Reports 2018

Works coming along nicely on the new Madagascar exhibits, do have pics but new phone takes to large a photo. Taken some of the solid fencing down so you can see more now, especially near the penguins.
Re-size pics and post for us all to see

Visited this afternoon. Tropical House was closed - anyone know why?

No sign of the young Okapi. Good views of Madidi and her mum; also both adult Sun Bear but not the youngster.

One of the Binturong was rather confrontational with Millie - chased her into her den. Not quite what I expected!

At least Millie recognises the No.1 mammal species ... :)

The Tropical House was still closed today.

Were the two adult Sun Bears mixed or being kept apart?

I hope the Tropical Realm isn't closed for long, I was planning a visit soon and love that place!

A house is being constructed for the tortoises. It's a fairly substantial affair.

OK - I'm surprised they are going to so much trouble! I don't suppose the Aye-Ayes are still on view are they? Was hoping to visit soon after putting it off many times and would be a shame to miss them!

Tropical Realm was open today - I think they're pausing construction at weekends. The house looks like a pretty big structure (I'm not sure I've seen such a big house within another building before).

Why build a large exhibit inside a building earmarked for demolition is this money well spent do you think?

1. I'd imagine even a "substantial tortoise house" within tropical realm will represent very small change for Chester (i.e. I can't see it having any impact on Chester's medium term goals);
2. Who know's when the building is due for demolition -it could still be a couple of years yet;
3. Are you suggesting that until the Tropical Realm is demolished the tortoises should be housed in sub-optimal accommodation (because that would seem the alternative)?

I wasn't suggesting anything like that they could always have made another enclosure somewhere else in the collection just wondering why they have refurbished a large exhibit .

They have not refurbished a large exhibit, they have built something new in an old one, but one that is already temperature controlled. Building a new exhibit somewhere else would cost substantially more money

Thanks for this - I'll be visiting midweek though to avoid the crowds so may well miss out! So, if anyone knows if the Aye-Aye exhibit was accessible when the Tropical Realm was closed, please confirm as this would be much appreciated.

Visited 2 weeks ago and saw that they now have a female trogon in with the male as well as a new bird species in the old Scops owl enclosure. Exhibit was in-signed so couldn’t ID species but looked like a brown dove/pigeon. Also the new sun bear cub ventured out in Friday for the first time

Tropical Realm was open again today - building work on the tortoise house was continuing so some of the paths within the building were closed off, but all of the animals usually on-show could still be seen.

In other news, the Sun Bear cub was very active for most of this morning, with Milli apparently happy to sleep and nurse the cub in the on-show indoor exhibit. I've posted some photos in the gallery.

Which gallery? And how do we access?

Thanks.
