A pair of white-tailed jays (Cyanocorax mystacalis) are now housed with the Lilacine Amazon Parrots.

The female cinereous vulture (Aegypius monachus) is now in the duck rearing aviary. I don't know why.

Judging from BBC news footage, the rare David Cameron was also at Chester zoo very recently.

I believe that he was allowed to escape, although it seems a pity to let such an endangered species go. Maybe one of the Borises didn't want him at the zoo :)

Okapi, Stuma has given birth to her second calf! :D Video of the birth is on the zoos Facebook page

*RARE OKAPI BORN!*
Watch the wonderful moment our okapi Stuma gave birth.
An unusual African animal, the okapi is the closest-living relative to the giraffe.
With only 14 in zoos in the UK, our new arrival - a male called Usala - is an important boost to the breeding programme for the endangered animals.
We hope that being able to see Usala's birth will draw some much needed attention to this incredibly beautiful species.

Excellent news!:D Okapi are a wonderful species whose new births are always welcomed. Congrats to Chester:)

At the members talk last night the zoo said that they plan to keep mum & calf off show and peaceful for a bit longer. Okapi are shy animals you know :)

oh i know they are , we go least once a month so we will see them at some point :)

Ah right - just your comment about going next week and looking for a sneak peak - didn't want your expectations dashed but if your happy with a view sometime I'm sure Stuma will accomodate us at some juncture :)

ive got a yearly membership so its no rush to see babies , took me weeks to see the tigers coz they were always asleep when i went lol

Sorry I don't think it is right OK some children might think it is wonderful but not all children are the same, I personally know it goes on but wouldn't like to see it. I could upset a lot of children, like I say I know it is only natural.

Sure it could upset children but what is the harm in that? Children can and will get upset by numerous things without it being a real problem. Yesterday my daughter was highly upset by the fact that I refused to allow her eat food in my bed but she got over it like she would if there was a moment of upset related to seeing an animal eat its food.

Children are usually not more sensitive to bad things than human, in part their immature brains often do the opposite, it protects them by not understanding every single detail. In cases where children would be very upset a responsible parent would surely be able to give the child a good explanation of the situation and then the child could move on in life.

Tee hee, I sometimes forget children are human :)

I took my friend's little daughter, whose whole family are vegetarian and very much against meat eating, to a bird of prey display. She asked what they were eating and I told her they were chicks. She said "I think they are oranges". I didn't argue. However shortly after she went up to participate and came back completely unfussed and whispered "They are chicks".

A couple of years later she was given an adoption of the wild dogs at YWP and part of it was to feed them, she was quite accepting that meat IS what they eat so you've got to do it.

Okapi calves nest, so will be left in the undergrowth hiding which limits viewing possibilites but will follow mum around.

Great, suggest you do check regularly they grow at a rapid rate and within 6 months you will struggle to realise it is a calf....in fact its the age some husbandry guides suggest starting to separate calf from mum. (which is at a point the female could concieve again).

I saw the previous one pretty soon after she went on show and couldn't believe what a stocky little thing she was, I was expecting something delicate looking!

It was supposed to be adults. Although children do sometimes seem like a totally different species to adults sometimes.
