Lots of noise on social media about the increases in membership fee this year...although I am a member I cannot remember how much it was last year! At £79 for 2015 how much has this gone up by since last year?

It cost myself and my partner £135 to renew our joint membership in December, I think the time before it was £115, so works out being about £10 extra each. Not bad really since we have islands opening this year and already good value for money

Last year adult membership at Chester was £69, it has gone up by £10, I agree with Javan
Rhino it is still good value for money.

Standard admission until the end of March is £16, so after 5 visits you get in for free.

I think annual passes are great value if you know you're going to visit more than the minimum amount of times to cover the cost. Plus members at most places get extra benefits too.

Black Rhino born yesterday morning to 17-year-old Kitani.

Video of the birth is on the zoo's Facebook page. Excellent news and they seem to be having lots of success with their rhinos over the last few years. How many breeding rhinos do the zoo currently hold and how many offspring have been born in the last 5 years?

Four offspring in 5 years - Chanua (b.2012 Magadi x Ema Elsa), Dakima (b.2013 Magadi x Malindi), Embu (b. 2013 Magadi x Zuri) and now the latest calf.

Breeding males are Kifaru and Magadi, breeding females are the three above plus Kitani.

After a hiatus of about ten years(or more) when there was little successful breeding, they have really got their act together Black Rhino-wise, with some judicious transfers and the acquisition of other animals, so that these days they rank second only to Port Lympne as Black Rhino breeders in the UK.

Interesting to note that none of the early ones born at Chester have any descendants. That's because they died after being transferred to other Zoos(apart from the 93/94 births.) It is only with 'Kitani' that you get a 2nd generation birth when she herself bred.

What is Kitani's breeding history at Chester?

Sadly Asani died recently at Port Lympne. PM still underway

Very sad news! When did Asani die? Does anyone have a photo of Asani, which I may use for my website? ( as I try to add a photo of each rhino passed away to Rhinos in Europe)

Could someone help with the black rhinos at Chester, please. Chester Zoo's website says there are 10 black rhinos. Well, I've listed 11 animals - not counting the newest baby rhino. Which of these rhinos are not at Chester anymore?

Males:
Kifaru II (349, *1984)
Magadi (714, *1999)
Sammy (750, *1999)
Embu (1051, *2013)

Females:
Kitani (680, *1997)
Manyara (696, *1998)
Ema Elsa (898, *2002)
Malindi (947, *2005)
Zuri (883, *2007)
Chanua (998, *2012)
Dakima (1049, *2013)

Sammy left the collection in June.

Thank you. Where is Sammy now?

According to BBC, he is the father of the new female baby rhino named "Fara".

Sammy is on breeding loan to Port Lympne - the new calf at Chester was conceived before he left
