Interesting to note that none of the early ones born at Chester have any descendants. That's because they died after being transferred to other Zoos(apart from the 93/94 births.) It is only with 'Kitani' that you get a 2nd generation birth when she herself bred.
What is Kitani's breeding history at Chester?
Very sad news! When did Asani die? Does anyone have a photo of Asani, which I may use for my website? ( as I try to add a photo of each rhino passed away to Rhinos in Europe)
Linda died in 1975 at Chester, aged about 18 months I think.
The first one 'Reginald' (named after Bristol Zoo director) I think went to Moscow?
Short term aim learn the husbandry of the species, next step is bred the species!Hopefully sometime this year they might go on-show!I've just been looking at elephant shrews on Zootierliste, and discovered that Chester acquired 0.3 Short-eared elephant shrews in December. Anybody know what the plans for these are?

That is a place that has been mentioned for them, but they don't come from the same location as the Okapi so they may end up some where else in the zoo,and something else could go in the Okapi House!I wonder if they will go on-show in the okapi house.
Another possibility that occurs to me would be to house them with the Cape Hyrax, if the two species were deemed safe to mix - which they may well not be.
Great to see more small mammals in the collection. I would suggest that long term they, as well as the naked mole rats, should go on exhibit in the African Savannah side of the zoo. Will obviously require a new enclosed exhibit to be built and no idea what the timescale or location for that would be....? One possibility would be to get rid of the video display room in the painted dogs viewing hut and turn that into an additional exhibit. I know the educational aspect of the video is important but there is seldom many people watching it and the tv could always be re-sighted to an alternative location on the wall.....just a thought?
Just a few observations from my visit today:
-There is a stunning new display of bromeliads in the pool as you enter the tropical realm
-2 empty aviaries upstairs in the tropical realm, quite a few of the bleeding-heart doves seem to have gone.
-2 new displays in the aquarium, a UK marine tank featuring corkwing wrasse and shannies, and a large shoal of rainbow shiner
-Saw two of the tiger cubs wrestling, but no sign of a third.
-Lots of freshly emerged butterflies in the butterfly house
