The zoo have announced via Facebook that a four-year-old male Spectacled Bear, 'Bernardo', has arrived from Tulsa as a companion for the lone female, Franka.

Great news, and thanks for not mentioning deep-fried food. ;)

A nice bit of news, this :)

With regards to the annual report mentioned at the end of the last thread, what does one have to do to qualify to receive the report in the post? We're members but I don't recall having ever received a hard copy of it.

You have to specifically request being sent a hard copy when you initially register as a member, otherwise they assume you wish to be sent an email copy. You can, of course, go into the membership office and ask for your status to be changed if you want to start getting hard copies, or indeed if you want to cease.

You also have to be an adult member,as junior members do not have voting rights at the AGM,hence why they don't get a copy of the annual report!

I see there is no fast track available at the entrance for members anymore, the main benefit of being a member for me, besides of course the discount, which is still excellent value for money was being able to bypass the 100's of schoolkids etc at the entrance but now we have to queue like everyone else, oh well, it was nice to feel wanted for a while.

I agree NikonUser58, members have to queue up with normal visitors and also can no longer use the Caughall Road entrance, it does make you wonder if the zoo really values the people who support it throughout the year. And I am still waiting for the Members' area of the website.

also, has the members discount been cut to 10% from 20%. It certainly used to be 20%. And the number of other free zoos to visit within the 12 month membership period has been cut in the last 24 months for members.
Not being allowed to use the Caughall Road entrance too is disappointing, especially on busy days and for avoiding the increasingly annoying photographers at they swarm around the main entrance.

Saying that I am still looking forwards to getting a Monday off work to go to the zoo again on 30th June for the first time in a couple of months and before the summer holidays start!! Several new developments and new animals for me to catch up with.

It has indeed - I seem to recall something being said that as the membership fee did not go up with inflation last year this was only fair.

You are right the discount did used to be 20%,it changed sometime last year!

Also you can thank the government for there been less collections that you can get in free to with your Chester card, because if you check all the ones that have been removed are not charity's or not part of the United Kingdom, this is due to a change I believe in the gift aid rules!!!

And despite of this I bet our membership renewal in January will go up in price from this years with the same 10% discount and same limited free other collection visit opportunities at best. We the public never get a deal these days! I suspect there will be a significant increase in cost to annual fee which will be attributed to the Islands development...

Perhaps we could deep-fry the photographers? :D

Those photographers are an innovation which really, really, really bugs me.

Given the reduction in free visits is out of the zoo's hands, this is the only one of the recent gripes here that really bothers me*. Photographers there if you want them is one thing, being accosted at every visit is another!

*though it is a shame the pedestrian entrance has closed.

I have to say, the photographers (when I was there) just didn't take no for an answer.

I had the same trouble last July at London, I made a complaint and was told someone would have a word. There is a big difference in providing a service and harrassment.

I usually manage to get past them at UK zoos, but even when you're a 30-year-bloke on his own they somehow think you'll want a badly-photoshopped picture of yourself - London and Blackpool Sea Life are other places where it's the same game. I walked into London just behind another solo visitor and we were almost coralled into sharing a photo! Perhaps we should've acquiesced - it could have been the beginning of a beautiful friendship...
