The Scottish Wildcat webcam feed can now be viewed in the 'Acting Locally' hut near the zoo entrance.

Mission Golden-Eyed Tree Frogs are labelled as being in the vivarium in Tropical Realm next to the Caiman Lizards that used to house Ratsnakes (?).

The frogs are there - or one is at least! I saw one on Sunday. :)

According to the summer 2014 EAZA Zooquaria newsletter, Chester has become one of the most recent new holders for Northern Luzon slender-tailed cloud rat.
Nothing like EAZA jumping the gun,it should read Chester will be a new holder of Northern Luzon Cloud Rat,as they haven't arrived yet!

visited yesterday 16th have a few questions which I am sure could be answered on here.

How long have they had the Great Argus Pheasants and where did they come from (beautiful looking birds) and will they try and breed from them.

Will there be any entrance to the new islands project from the main rd or just from the area between the Scimitar and Sitatunga paddocks.

now for my highlights of the day

Both Jaguars showing well, Violet turaco and young in the exhibit at the top of the stairs in the Tropical Realm female in the free flight area male and young in the aviary.

Rock Hyrax - female and young in one exhibit and the male in the other.

Great to see the Pudu out an about.

Managed to see the Banded Mongoose for the first time.

Watched the Eurasian Spoonbill nibbling away at a dead rabbit presumably food for the Vulture.

Saw the young Javan Banteng with it's mother father close by and what a size he is.

What bats are in the free flight bat exhibit please?

Mission Golden-eyed tree frog showing well in the exhibit near the exit door at the back.

Does anyone know if they intend to replace the current old Andean Condor with a young pair if or when anything happens to the current one or will they go out of this species considering they are opening the Islands Project.

@ Adrian1963 I will answer your questions the best I can, first the Great Argus Pheasant the male has been at the zoo for the best part of 2 years if not more the female arrived this year,so given that they have brought in a female I would say that they will try and bred from them!

The only entrance to Islands will be from the current zoo and not any new entrance just for Island!

The bats in the Fruit Bat Forest are Rodrigues and Livingstones Fruit Bat and Sebas Short-tailed Bat.

As for your question about the Condors I cannot see what the opening of Islands has to do with what they do with the Condors, given that the 2 areas are not even in the same part of the zoo! While the Condors are old birds the chances are the 2 of them will still be around the zoo for atleast another 10-15 years!

Many thanks Zoogiraffe the thing I was asking about with the condors was not meant as any thing other than would the zoo concentrate on stocking Islands with species before renewing species outside of the Islands Project.

Many thanks for the bat identifications I am just starting to get interested in bats I find them very interesting and much misunderstood.

Chester does have plans to keep animals that will not fit within the Islands remit,at the end of the day it is just one great big themed zone, which at some point in the distant future the whole zoo will be different themed zones!

The great argus pheasants would certainly fit into the Islands scheme, although I think they will need a larger aviary than the one they have now when the male gets his full plumage and displays. Don't forget that Islands will accommodate quite a few of the species already on show in the Zoo, so there will eventually be room for several new species from other areas of the world.

The male Great Argus Pheasant is not yet old enough to breed. The female was introduced after he had started to moult, so even if he was of breeding age, she arrived too late for this year's breeding season.

The male arrived about a year ago and the female in the spring of this year. I don't know where they came from.

Went last week, I like the bats, 'specially standing in the 'window' of the tunnel and feeling them whizz past your head, the negative is the danger of being deafened by the piercing screams of stupid people who should not go in if they they are that scared of bats.

Saw not one single Bornean orangutan, never mind the lovely Tuan grrrr.

Must agree with OrangePerson on the people in the bat walk thru but it happens at all bat walk thru's why do people do it.

The birth of 1.1 Red Pandas has just been confirmed
