First things first; to reduce the amount of superfluous news posts I have merged the two summer news threads - this one and the "food and drink free" one :)

Secondly, a nice little announcement on the Chester FB page.....

*IMPORTANT NEW RHINO ARRIVES!*

Meet Kifaru, our new 29-year-old Eastern black rhino, who is settling in nicely after moving from Hannover Zoo in Germany.

Kifaru will soon be introduced to our females and it's hoped he will go on to work his magic and sire new calves.

There are thought to be less than 650 Eastern black rhinos left in the wild, placing the species perilously close to extinction. So the black rhinos in zoos are vital as an insurance policy against further declines in Africa. Kifaru has a great opportunity to add to the population - making him one of the most important rhinos around!

A rather nice photo of the new male can be found at the announcement here:

The zoo are very much cashing in on the relative success of BBC Drama 'Our Zoo'. A set of signposts have been erected opposite the Banteng paddock with various historical photographs from the zoo and captions on the (actual) events shown. 'Reared in Chester Zoo' is sold out in the gift shop and tour of the Oakfield are being advertised at the entrance.

The 'Rare Parrot Breeding Centre', which is the Lilacine Amazon Parrot aviary between the greenhouses and the Banteng paddock, is currently closed.

Don't know where i've been, (I obviously don't read the Chester threads on this site.)but visiting yesterday was the first i'd heard or seen of the Islands Project. Wow it's very impressive.

Lantern Magic

Visited yesterday, work on Islands is progressing steadily and the entrance bridge is nearly complete.

The animals for Lantern Magic at Christmas are now on the Oakfield Lawn. In the middle of September. I think it is far too early.

Visitors are still having problems reading and understanding the map.

Saw a young sitatunga, and one of the onagers seems to have made friends with a camel, they were together each time I passed the exhibit.

The animals for Latern Magic are on the lawn for a big event with The Girl Guide Assoc this weekend. Nothing to do with Lantern Magic

Decline in visitor numbers?

No mention of the 'millionth visitor' so far this year.

In 2012 this was 7th September and last year the millionth visitor was 2nd September.

Either they haven't posted this info yet or there has been a slight decline in visitors??

Yes, they have passed the 1m visitor a couple fo weeks ago but didnt want to keep announcing it every year. I think the hope is that it will be passed by mid summer next year the way Islands is shaping up

The aviary in the Parrot Breeding Centre housing the flock of Amazon parrots is undergoing refurbishment.

1.1 Pied Tamarins are in the pygmy marmoset enclosure, windows blanked out and the house closed off while they settle in.

Another sitatunga has been born.

The anoa house and the restaurant are taking shape in Islands.

Two very nice pieces of news.

The Komodo had a carcass feed on sunday drawing some great comments from the watching crowds. The Monserrat Tarantula are also on display in Islands in Danger

it was impressive (and stinky) see the gallery for a photo of the tarantula too - posted an image yesterday.

Sad bit of news from the weekend, the male sloth has passed away last week. I think the sloths were one of the best recent additions. Hope they will get another male to pair with the female soon.

Visitor numbers were up 52% in September! Zoo puts this down to a combination of fine weather and 'Our Zoo' driving increase in footfall.

Do you think they are counting the 4000 brownies that went the other weekend in that figure.

Shame about the sloth, I would, like the zoo, convert the grass area outside spirit of the Jaguars to,a outside enclosure for them
