Chester Zoo Chester Zoo told to prepare to remain closed indefinitely

I would point you in the direction of Boris Johnson's current girlfriend.
Has she got form in this area? I’ve not heard so, but in googling to find out more I did come across the fact that Whipsnade named a baby penguin after her and our beloved leader’s new son. How... charming.....

Just after the zoo's press release earlier today about how much financial trouble they could potentially be in, I had a look at their JustGiving page to see how much money they'd already raised and it was around the £120,000 mark.

I had another look just a minute ago and it's now nearly at £400,000!

Chester Zoo: keeping up the fight for an extinction-free future

That's really pleasing, and its amazing to see how much love there is for Chester Zoo out there. However, what the zoo really needs is to be able to open - and of course that would be helpful to all the zoos!

We did an interview with local radio yesterday, and our CrowdFunder total following it has now reached £155

I've just caught a bit about Chester, featuring the giraffes, on BBC Breakfast. After letting the keeper speak about the dire situation, they went back to the studio for the inevitable jokes about animals. I am censoring myself at the moment

I don't know what you mean given who the female presenter was this morning, apart from she makes me switch off the telly, whenever she is on the sofa.

I presumed he meant there was a £155 increase in the total since the interview?
Yes and thank you TLD, that is what I meant, which is why I said 'following it' - with 'it' meaning the local radio interview which was done at pretty much the same time as Chester's statement, and therefore the financial results of both can be fairly compared. I am sorry for assuming this was clear. Like us, Chester may raised more before the statement too, I dont know. The small number of donors we have had have been very kind and very generous, as can be seen from our overall total; and CrowdFunder too have waived their fees for Covid related fundraising, for which we and our donors are so very grateful.

I have no idea who you're talking about, but its pretty poor form making silly jokes about such an important story that clearly means a lot to many people. Its still worth putting up with it for the national media exposure, but its sad that they have to put up with it at all!

For those of us who didn't see it what were these "jokes" ?

If you register for a BBC account, you can watch here: BBC iPlayer - Breakfast - 04/06/2020 There are other catch-up services on BT, Sky etc. Skip to 45:00 and 2:40:00.

Well, I looked. Didn't see anything I'd call "jokes", just the standard cute animal intro that is used in these circumstances (unless I missed something). They could have spoken to the Finance Officer in an office but I think linking it to the penguins and giraffes makes it a "better" story from a media perspective and probably more appealing for normal viewers.

I'm pretty hopeful right now, unsure if that is a good thing though...

Its great what the BBC can do for its selected 'targets'.
BUT - how are the other 400 zoos doing? Have any of them received any more than us?
Chester should be fine for another month or two now, so maybe that will give the Government the excuse it needs to do nothing, and then the rest of us will suffer from Chester's success...
Oh dear - I must go and lie down, I can feel another conspiracy theory coming on...

That's just direct donations, alot of people out fundraising and I seen alot of other people and business have adopted animals.

I have a friend who adopted an animal instead of just giving a donation, I toyed between taking a couple of adoptions or making a donation, I chose the later as the adoption would lead to a small cost to the zoo with what you get with it.

Also a member but as mine is paid in one lump sum that will not help them now.

A donation is just that - an adoption is classed by HMRC as 'income' and will have (may have) tax taken from it, along with admin costs, and the cost of whatever materials, postage and services make up the adoption pack.
