Chester Zoo Chester Zoo told to prepare to remain closed indefinitely

That's all it is, an option for staff to take voluntary redundancy, nothing forced as of yet. Also support was suggested, but no actual details on how they would do this.

I personally didn't, but we were asked the question (along with a request for a quote on these three 'steps' listed) by local media today.

Sorry - I don't understand what you mean - what question were you asked?

Yes, I suppose many furloughed workers across society will be facing redundancy, as companies fail or realise they can operate with fewer... The huge amounts given by Government to those firms lucky enough to be able to furlough, will have delayed the inevitable not prevented it.

Apparently there is some big news regarding chester around 10 tonight, may have implications for other zoo's too

£2.5m on CrowdFunder - a promise from the Government to save them (maybe even at the expense of other Zoos) - and then they announce 300 job losses...mmmm???

Its clear that Chester Zoo quite rightly aren't relying on the government for handouts - they probably don't trust them to actually deliver. Wasn't there talk of it only being a loan anyway? I think the redundnacies plan is entirely sensible as, realistically, they've still got about £2.5 million less than they would have had it not been for the pandemic. There's money that has been borrowed to pay back too. And let's be honest, they're overstaffed anyway.

I can understand you being frustrated with the amount of support Chester Zoo gets - certainly in an ideal world the money would be getting shared out more equally - but life isn't fair. Personally I'm happy that such a brilliant place is getting the support it deserves, AND has drawn more attention to the plight of UK zoos in general. Hopefully there will be good news for all very soon.

I've just seen the BBC coverage from the zoo this morning.
What is the construction going on next to the penguin pool - it looks a major development?

It looks like Chester Zoo will hopefully be open from Monday. :)

Chester Zoo
I wonder if this only pertains to just Chester Zoo or has major implications for other zoos around the country.

I (would really be inclined) to say much else as to how the entire discourse on zoos and closure / opening is mired inconsequential and confusing guidance and directives and wavering policies on zoos by Government actually has without need damaged zoo operations in the UK (sometimes even beyond repair).

The new Latin American walkthrough aviary - Caribbean Flamingos, Roseate Spoonbills, Scarlet Ibis etc. :)

All zoos in England are able to open outdoor and drive-through areas (with restrictions). Not complete normality, but a big (and welcome) step that way. :)

Hoping that the zoo will limit the number of members that can book, when the system is up and running, say 50/50, otherwise if to many members go they will make very little extra money

Did I imagine it or was there mention of them possibly holding some members-only evenings? That would seem like a good idea.

That would be good, always wanted evening walks around the zoo, always strange, although understandable they closed at 6 in the summer

Evening visits sound very nice! I have done one at Whipsnade before but I'd love to do one at Chester!
