Chester Zoo Chester Zoo updates *3

And Tuan the man has NO problems in that department! Go Tuan!

Its more unusual to come across male Orangutans that have problems breeding than with Gorillas, though at present both Blackpool and Paignton seem to be having this problem. I don't known if 'Ramon' is a 'mater', 'Demo' at Paignton certainly is but something is wrong(infertile?) there as there are still no babies.

'Raman' has mated with Summer, however not Cherie or Victoria. He is still scared of Victoria, so when he moves to Chester maybe he can watch 'Tuan' or 'Puluh' to become a proper male. I know Puluh isn't a Bornean but he's still an impressive male Sumatran. ;)

They would be unlikely to keep him within sight of them as it can cause aggression and the adult males might be stimulated into destructive behaviour while trying to get at/drive off at their supposed younger 'rival'.

If Ramon mates even one female, then its more likely he doesn't mate the others becomes of dominance issues etc. A surer way to get them pregnant would be to give them access to 'Tuan' if they go there. I imagine they will keep them offshow in the old Orangutan House and it could easily be done in there, lots of space.

It's a crying shame keeping Tuan off show - he's a stonking male with the most tremendous 'long call' I'd fight long and hard to keep him at chester and very much on show!

Oh dear, maybe calling him Demo was where they went wrong! Seems an unfortunate name for a fella who doesn't get the job done right!

Maybe when the islands changes happen he might be able to be on show, but then again maybe he doesn't want to be!

It was nice to see the Indian rhino snuggled up together in the mud today, they looked a very happy pair!

This is still not a confirmed move and may not happen at all, until everything is confirmed by both Chester and Blackpool, all this move is a rumour that could get out of hand!!!

Yes, poor Tuan might be reading this and getting his hopes up for a line-up of eager ladies coming his way! What a disappointment!

If Blackpool need to move their Orangs out for a while, Chester would be the obvious recipient as they have the space to take them in the old Orangutan House.

I don't know how else Blackpool could completely refurbish their Orangutan housing- which is much needed incidentally, but whether such a move is really on the cards or not I'll leave to others to discuss.

No-one has yet mentioned the best news from yesterday's walk-and-talk. We saw a new-born Philippine spotted deer fawn, particularly welcome as the buck died a little while ago and no-one was sure that the doe was pregnant.

Two more photos taken later in the day are in the Gallery.

Phew- so they are just clinging on at Chester for the moment then.

dammit - I managed to get a few decent images of the Buck a while back and was wondering where he was when I popped down there late saturday. I must have missed the fawn by seconds as I saw a keeper taking part of the fence down and thought they were just doing some repairs as there was no animal around - thus I left to watch the bears. Bother!!

I must have been a minute behind you - but as I had seen the fawn in the morning, I put 2 and 2 together when I saw the keepers removing the fence posts and the doe watching from the hard standing in front of the house. By waiting a few minutes I got a couple of so-so photos (in the Gallery). I wish they were better, but conditions were poor and I was distracted by rather pretty girl who kept asking me questions about photography :D

Some new blackbuck arrivals, females and a breeding male currently confined to the hard standing.

Do you know where they came from? They did have a male and a few females but I believe he died/moved on. Do they still have the original females plus the new specimens?
