Sounds like Chester only have the single 3year old male at present, but a female arriving in the coming months.

Edinburgh have two young males, I think one will eventually be swapped for a female.

I'd guess both could be breeding them by abut 2010....
If Whipsnade get a new male(perhaps one from Edinburgh?) after theirs(Jaffna) is returned to Basel later this year, they may be able to continue breeding in the meantime...
 
Yes that's right. I saw Her as a baby at Basel zoo. In England White Rhinos seem to be in the process of being phased out. Many zoos such as edinburgh are turning to black or Indian Rhinos.
 
So the female Indian rhino soon to come to Chester was bred at Basel? That means she is probably the daughter of Whipsnade's male Jaffna(who is currently on loan from Basle) and therefore a halfsister to Whipsnade's new calf.....
 
Yes they do. Jaffna is their bull, but came originally from San Diego where he was born. Indian rhinos bred from Basel animals have gone to a number of different zoos. The previous bull at Whipsnade, Kumar, was born at Amsterdam Zoo but was also from the Basel bloodline, I believe.
 
Yes, the gentics of some species which have been breeding in zoos for several generations now, gets very complicated. The Whipsnade male rhino I mentioned above, called Kumar, was, of course, the father of Gaidi who went to Chester(plus three other males too, one died, two went to other European zoos.) The old female Roopa, the mother, is still alive at Whipsnade.
 
I didn't know that Chester had more than One Indian rhino all those years ago. I'll have to ask some of the rhino keepers next time I go.

No, you must have read this wrong- Chester only ever had the single male Indian rhino Gaidi-born at Whipsnade, for a few years before he went to Germany. This new male( which maybe his son?) is onlyt the 2nd of this species they have exhibited. They've had plenty of different black rhinos though...
 
if uk zoos are phasing out white rhinos gradually i can see the sense in this, particularly for urban zoos or those with limited space to hold a natural 'herd' of these animals!
a bit more cost effective i guess!
 
I think its the most 'conservation conscious' collections which are phasing out White rhinos. They are still the main species kept by the Safari Parks and the other 'lesser' collections in UK though.
Here's a brief list of who has what in Uk;

Whipsnade; Whites(about 7/8) Indian 1.3 plus new female calf.
Chester;. Black (approx 4.4.) Indian 1.0 (female to come)
Edinburgh; Indian (2.0) No Whites any more.
Marwell; White.1.2.plus 1 offspring.(had Blacks previously- but pair died...)
Paignton; Black 1.1 plus new female baby born March. (They went from White to Black just a few years ago...)
Colchester; Whites 1.1.or 1.2 not bred yet
Cotswold W.P; White 1.1 or 1.2.- never bred
South Lakes W.A. P; Whites (pregnant)
Howletts/Port Lympne; Black c.25(3 are at Howletts) very successful.
West Midland Safari Park; *Whites- group breeding?
Knowsley Safari Park; *Whites(?)group breeding?
Longleat; Whites-*group breeding?
Woburn Whites- *group breeding?
Dublin; Whites- small group(6?)
Flamingo Park Yorkshire;- Whites 1.1(?)
Suffolk Wildlife Park;- Whites-1.1 or 1.2
Belfast? Whites (if anything).

*Not absolutely sure the Safari Parks all have White rhinos, or if all are breeding them, but I think this is right.

I guess you mean Chester has 3.3 Black Rhinos at present.?
From memory there is; m. Sammy. m. Quinto
f. Rosie. f. Kitani. f. Mayani/Manyara. f (?) came last year from Europe.
That's 2.4 rather than 3.3. unless there is still a third male.
Kitani (Pangani x Quinto) and Manyara/Mayani(Esther x Quinto) in the newer house are the two females born at Chester. Their male Sammy came I think from a Japanese zoo. Quinto & Pangani originally came together, from maybe Zurich. (Pangani is now dead. Esther, also dead, was born at London.

Rosie/Kitani/Manyara/Polish 1/Polish/ 2(Ema?) That's five..
And currently just the two males? = 2.4 0r 2.5.

Please fill me in...
 
I'm sorry but I don't know. The latest guide said 7 rhinos, ISIS says six. I'll have to count them next time I go. The new Orang house opens on the 26th may. I'm going around then

Okay thanks. I'm sure you'll find it will be either 2.4 or 2.5 as listed above.

They sent away at least two other non-breeding males(Katataka and Baringo 2) which has reduced the male total. 'Quinto' is proven and needs to breed again really.
