More info on the new species at Edinburgh zoo:
Edinburgh Zoo has unveiled a couple of unique additions to its animal collection, Visayan warty pigs and white-lipped deer. The two white-lipped deer are the only ones in the UK and the Visayan warty pigs are the only pair in Scotland. It is hoped that both sets of animals will become breeding pairs to assist in European Endangered Species Programmes.
White-lipped deer originate from Tibet, the Himalayas and some parts of China and they have white patches of fur around their mouths. In the wild these deer are hunted for their meat and antlers. They are also threatened by a growing human population which is damaging their habitat.
Visayan warty pigs are found on the Visayan Islands in the Philippines. The boar is much larger than the sow and has three sets of warts. These warts are part of a defence mechanism that protects them from the sharp tusks of some of their predators. Visayan warty pigs are seriously threatened in the wild. They eat domestic crops and, as a result, are hunted by farmers. Habitat destruction is also a threat to this unusual species.
Darren McGarry, Animal Collection Manager at Edinburgh Zoo, said:
“We are pleased to welcome these animals to collection, most importantly as they are both under threat in the wild. We are involved in breeding programmes so that we can help to sustain a viable population.”
