Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Cheyenne Mountain Zoo News

Some interesting news. Looks like keepers have no plans to introduce female hippo Kasai to her sister Zambezi and nephew Omo and instead plan to introduce her to their warthogs. Introductions have already began but currently they are still seperated by a barrier, they are hoping to have the warthogs and Kasai in the same yard together by next spring. Zoos rarely mix river hippos with other mammals so that would be cool if they are successful.

A model for other zoos to aspire to: A multiple common hippo exhibit.
Very much an undervalued and underappreciated species both in AZA and EAZA regions.
Just wonder why oh why???

African elephant news: They have quite an elderly elephant population with Jambo (38), Malaika (35), Lucky (41), LouLou (38), Kimba (42) and Missy (51) making up the herd, Obviously, no chance at breeding here .... Is Jambo any good as a breeder?

No, as far as I’m aware she’s never given birth so she’s about 15 years too old for a first.

I figured ... and it is Kiswahili language laws that Jambo is a masculine noun / name.
E.G. like there is Kito and Kita.

There’s also a female Common chimpanzee at Zoo Knoxville named Jambo.

I’ve also heard of Zuri (Swahili for beautiful) used on a male lion at Melbourne Zoo and a male giraffe imported by Orana Wildlife Park (it was changed to Harold after a mascot). It’s otherwise a name more typically (over)used on females within the captive population.
