The zoo lost their 14 year old matriarch Mexican Wolf and 19 year old Mountain Tapir yesterday. This was the last Mountain tapir at the zoo. There remains only 4 left at the LA Zoo.

This is extremely disappointing to me (and quite sad) as I have never seen a mountain tapir and moved to southeast Wyoming last year but have not yet had a chance to go to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. I don't have the time or money to visit LA again...I only went once in my childhood and I can not remember if I saw the mountain tapir or not (so I do not count them as having been seen).

On November 23rd, the zoo announced they are disassembling their carousel in order to make room for a new road in the western part of the facility, which will take at least a year to complete. The zoo also announced several other projects in the works, including renovating and expanding the African Rift Valley exhibits and the giraffe's indoor spaces, growing produce on-site, expanding the entry plaza, and designing a new exhibit for their orangutans.

Growing produce on site? Wow! What kinds of produce would they be growing? and do any other zoos do this?

They are looking to grow lettuce mainly, as they already have a testing site for that. To answer the other question, I've seen a few zoos do that but not any that I can think of at the moment.

A lot of them do, it's just not often visible/publicized. Maryland, for example, grows basically everything they possibly can themselves.

Ah very nice. I am going to do more research into this. In fact, I think this topic could be a thread of its own...
