Chimp Attack

Strange that there is no mentioning of the attack on the JGI South Africa face book site.
To euthanize the chimps would be the worst decision imaginable, not only for the chimps but also for the reputation of JGI.
If something like this happens twice it must be the fault of the institution concerned.

Once they have learnt that they can put up with the shocks of the electric fence while escaping the only other thing that could be done is to cage them. Sounds like they had become unmanageable and a dangerous liability to have around.

JGISA have appealed for money to make a new escape-proof enclosure. People are questioning exactly what happened. PASA made a statement saying that euthanasia was not a chimp management tool apart from illness etc however the link no longer works.

JGI not giving up to save chimps
Not even one per cent of the estimated money required to build a safer enclosure for two primates at the sanctuary has been raised.

30 days and R2,6m to save chimps
Chimp Eden is under attack on social media about its decisions following the attack on an employee by two primates.

IF governments are reluctant to fund / foot the bill for rescue efforts and rehabilitation programs where chimps or any other confiscated wildlife for that matter are concerned and are legally confiscated, THIS is what happens.

For what it is worth the S.African government has a legal obligation to provide good animal welfare housing at cost (untill such time when the chimps in question might be sent back to their country of origin).

As in wildlife trade combat / law enforcement alike most if not all governments are seriously lacking / flawed both in capacity and in operation and enforcement of international wildlife trade laws and awfully inefficient.

Hence, part of the blame-game here may rest with management of the sanctuary, but the very much greater part is the serious failure on the part of the Ministry of Environment to do its bit right!!!
