Chimpanzees in Europe

At Zoo Krefeld, construction of the 1st phase of the monkey park will start in 2023. This 1st phase will consist of a two-storey building. The ground floor will house the animal facilities and visitor area, while the upper floor will house the animal care area. An new outdoor enclosure for West African chimpanzees, covered with netting, is located at the north end of the building. The outdoor enclosure will have a varied landscape with trees, climbing logs, platforms, a water stream, huts and rocks. Large panoramic windows will offer views of the indoor and outdoor enclosures.

When everything is ready, the first to move to this new enclosure will be chimpanzees Bally and Limbo. There, they will form the start of a new chimpanzee group at Zoo Krefeld. The EEP has reserved three female chimpanzees for Krefeld, two of which will be allowed to breed with Limbo.

What will be the future of the chimpanzees at Amsterdam, Artis zoo? How many animals are there housed, names, ages and how are they related?
Could there be build a new housing and outside area for these animals? A island with something like woodland? Maybe that will benefit these wonderful creatures.

The future of the chimpanzees at Artis is that they are very likely to leave the zoo. The group has been on a list of available animals for other zoos for several years now. And several zoos have been interested in the past, but have been turned down each time for various reasons. Rumours are that there is currently another zoo with interest in the group, but no decision has been made on this yet.

If I am correct, this should be the current chimpanzee group in Artis:

1,0 Vizuri (2-4-1998, Artis) (P. t. hybrid) Son of Leentje
1,0 Wakili (16-10-2003, Artis) (P. t. hybrid) Son of Amber
1,0 Ajani (27-8-2013, Artis) (P. t. hybrid) Son of Amber
0,1 Margo (??-7-1970, Wild) (Subspecies unknown)
0,1 Leentje (??-12-1981, Wild) (P. t. schweinfurthii)
0,1 Quincy (10-3-1988, Artis) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Amber (5-4-1994, Dierenpark Amersfoort) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Saphira (20-6-2001, Burgers’ Zoo) (P. t. hybrid)

At Antwerp zoo the chimpanzee group is still split with Chita getting multiple females. Not just Mia and Marit anymore. I don't remember all the names anymore but I could probably pick them out if I see them. The Coordinator apparently really wants offspring not even looking at sub species anymore. The other males are kept with some females. Still no pregnancies. And a reluctance to electroejeculation and IVF techniques.

Two new chimpanzees arrived at Burgers' Zoo late last year.

From Aalborg Zoo came 28-year-old Western chimpanzee Laura. The contraceptive implant she had was removed before departure. It is hoped that she will have young at Burgers' Zoo.

A male chimpanzee came to Burgers' Zoo from Kolmarden Zoo. More information about him has not been given.

Does anyone have a list of the current individuals at Burgers Zoo (parentage, DOB's included)?

Thanks!

Interesting to see there hasn't breeding in a very long time. Presumably the plan is to breed from the new female, Laura, and potentially some of the similar aged girls Tushi, Erika, Geisha and Raimee.

Are any of the chimps not intact?

Thanks!

There hasn't been any breeding as there has been a lot of genetic testing to determine which animals can and can't be bred from, and with a lot of false starts it's taken a while.

A few of the females, including Laura, are pure West African but most are subspecies hybrids. Two of the males, Fons and new male Claudius, are also pure West African. So hopefully breeding can be restarted over the next couple of years.

Of the 16 chimpanzees in Arnhem, 10 are hybrids. These are not being bred with. One of the males in the group, Giambo, was first thought to be a hybrid after which he was sterilised. Afterwards, he turned out to be a pure Western chimpanzee after all and an attempt was made to reverse the sterilisation, only to be unsuccessful.

A new Western chimpanzee male had been awaited for several years. With the arrival of Claudius late last year, it finally happened. The introduction of both this male and the new female Laura are currently in progress.

Below is a list of the chimpanzees in Arnhem, with subspecies status:

1,0 Fons (18-08-1975, Burgers’ Zoo) (? x Franje) (P. t. hybrid)
1,0 Jing (22-03-1981, Burgers’ Zoo) (? x Jimmie) (P. t. hybrid)
1,0 Claudius (03-07-1984, Boras) (Clabbe x Pippi) (P. t. verus)
1,0 Giambo (25-01-1989, Burgers’ Zoo) (Tarzan x Kuif) (P. t. verus)
1,0 Gihneau (29-12-2005, Burgers’ Zoo) (Jing x Gaby) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Moniek (07-06-1977, Burgers’ Zoo) (? x Splutter) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Roosje (23-04-1979, Burgers’ Zoo) (? x Kromme) (P. t. verus)
0,1 Gaby (28-01-84, Burgers’ Zoo) (? x Kuif) (P. t. verus)
0,1 Tesua (14-04-1986, Burgers’ Zoo) (Fons x Tepel) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Morami (07-02-1987, Burgers’ Zoo) (Tarzan x Moniek) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Moni(ka) (26-03-1989, Veszprem) (Heini x M¢ni) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Tushi (21-02-1992, Burgers’ Zoo) (Fons x Tepel) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Erika (14-09-1992, Givskud) (Toto I x Marlene) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Geisha (26-09-1993, Burgers’ Zoo) (Jing x Kuif) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Laura (14-09-1994, Aalborg) (Didrik x Jutta) (P. t. verus)

Thank you. Much appreciated.

That would therefore mean Burgers can only breed from four individuals; the two new imports (Claudius and Laura), and mother and daughter Roosje and Raimee. Not sure how long it’s been since Roosje last conceived but there should definitely still be a chance with Raimee.

Raimee is the last offspring Roosje had.

Female Gaby is also a Western chimpanzee, mistake on my part. I have updated the post.

The above information is pretty outdated. A lot of the subspecies identities from the 2014 studbook (which I presume is where Menno got the info from) have since been updated in the last decade following perfecting of the genetic testing. The western animals in the group are now known to be Fons, Claudius, Roosje, Gaby, Tesua, Tushi and Laura, thereby opening up the breeding options to two males and three females

With a limited founder base, the breeding programmes have opted to pursue breeding animals with at least 50% pure heritage as well, so no doubt there will be others in the group that might also be bred from (Erika for instance).

Thanks for the correction! Info was indeed from the 2014 studbook. Surprised that Giambo is not a pure western chimp after all. About three years ago, Burgers' Zoo still reported that he is. So then the first test was right after all :D.

According to the 2014 studbook, Fons would have been castrated. So if that is correct, it would make sense that no young were born in recent years.

Twycross Zoo - Jambo William Flynn Jomar Peter Tommy Danny Kibali, Coco Noddy Rosie Tojo Lottie Samantha Holly Josie Victoria Genet Tuli (7.6 non-sub, 0.2 P.t.s, 1.3 P.t.v)

HJKR gives details of deaths prior to last October, including Noddy, Tojo, Rosie, Lottie, (Charlotte), Samantha and Danny, (Danny Boy).

Twycross Zoo News 2022

William died suddenly at the age of 41 on 11th July.

'Much-loved' chimpanzee found dead at Twycross Zoo - BBC News

That presumably leaves Peter, (M31), and Tommy, (M28), in the smaller grouping. The "main" grouping would then comprise; Jambo, (M41), Flynn, (M37), Kibali, (M20), Coco, (F58), Holly, (F41), Victoria, (F33), Josie, (F35), Genet, (F28), and Tuli, (F16).

Does anybody have an updated list or a studbook about European chimps with mentioning their subspecies? I only have an old studbook from 2009. If I know well in the last 10 years zoos made DNA tests to know well the subspecies of the chimps in zoos.

There’s also an online stud book from 2014 available too if that may interest you.
