Chimpanzees in Europe

The chimpanzees in Gelsenkirchen already finished the quarantine time and already visible in the smaller enclosure next to the chimpanzee group. They start the process of introdution and they want the younger female(isn't she a hybrid?) to use in breeding. If I know well the zoo has a verus family.

Of the 16 chimpanzees in Arnhem, 10 are hybrids. These are not being bred with. One of the males in the group, Giambo, was first thought to be a hybrid after which he was sterilised. Afterwards, he turned out to be a pure Western chimpanzee after all and an attempt was made to reverse the sterilisation, only to be unsuccessful.

A new Western chimpanzee male had been awaited for several years. With the arrival of Claudius late last year, it finally happened. The introduction of both this male and the new female Laura are currently in progress.

Below is a list of the chimpanzees in Arnhem, with subspecies status:

1,0 Fons (18-08-1975, Burgers’ Zoo) (? x Franje) (P. t. hybrid)
1,0 Jing (22-03-1981, Burgers’ Zoo) (? x Jimmie) (P. t. hybrid)
1,0 Claudius (03-07-1984, Boras) (Clabbe x Pippi) (P. t. verus)
1,0 Giambo (25-01-1989, Burgers’ Zoo) (Tarzan x Kuif) (P. t. verus)
1,0 Gihneau (29-12-2005, Burgers’ Zoo) (Jing x Gaby) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Moniek (07-06-1977, Burgers’ Zoo) (? x Splutter) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Roosje (23-04-1979, Burgers’ Zoo) (? x Kromme) (P. t. verus)
0,1 Gaby (28-01-84, Burgers’ Zoo) (? x Kuif) (P. t. verus)
0,1 Tesua (14-04-1986, Burgers’ Zoo) (Fons x Tepel) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Morami (07-02-1987, Burgers’ Zoo) (Tarzan x Moniek) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Moni(ka) (26-03-1989, Veszprem) (Heini x M¢ni) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Tushi (21-02-1992, Burgers’ Zoo) (Fons x Tepel) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Erika (14-09-1992, Givskud) (Toto I x Marlene) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Geisha (26-09-1993, Burgers’ Zoo) (Jing x Kuif) (P. t. hybrid)
0,1 Laura (14-09-1994, Aalborg) (Didrik x Jutta) (P. t. verus)
0,1 Raimee (15-05-1999, Burgers’ Zoo) (Jelle x Roosje) (P. t. verus)
I saw here she is hybrid.

And if you would have read a few more posts, you would see that that information from the 2014 studbook is outdated:

The above information is pretty outdated. A lot of the subspecies identities from the 2014 studbook (which I presume is where Menno got the info from) have since been updated in the last decade following perfecting of the genetic testing. The western animals in the group are now known to be Fons, Claudius, Roosje, Gaby, Tesua, Tushi and Laura, thereby opening up the breeding options to two males and three females

With a limited founder base, the breeding programmes have opted to pursue breeding animals with at least 50% pure heritage as well, so no doubt there will be others in the group that might also be bred from (Erika for instance).

Sorry, then it's my mistake. I started following the chimpanzee population not a long time ago.

The move of the chimpanzee group at Artis will not go ahead for now. The group's leader, 20-year-old Wakili, has fragile health that suddenly deteriorated this year. Artis only wants to go ahead with the move if the entire group can move to a new zoo together. The move to the zoo Artis was in talks with is definitely off the table.

As a result, all options are back on the table. In any case, the process for a possible move will have to be restarted. Nothing can yet be said about a possible expansion of the current enclosure. Artis first wants to explore all options again.Artis says that the current enclosure for the animals has its limitations and that there is also not infinite space for expansion.

Maybe a good and reasonable would be if Zoo Emmen starts a group of chimps. Instead of the intended gorilla group and housing. In that case the Artis group of chimps can start as the first chimps at Emmen. To be added some other animals to ensure a future pure bred group group of one of the potential subspecies.
Maybe. A suggestion.

To my knowledge, Wildlands/Emmen has no intention of keeping gorillas, and therefore probably no intention of keeping chimpanzees either.

The press release on the website contains some more information about the young chimpanzee. The baby is a male. His mother is Tushi. She is the (world) famous chimp from the video that knocked a drone out of the sky. His father is Claudius who moved to Burgers' Zoo from sweden earlier this year. Besides this baby, another baby is expected soon with another female chimp.

Chimpanzee twins were reportedly born at Dierenpark Amersfoort around the beginning of October. The young were seen by visitors. One of the two youngsters died, the other is still alive. Mother still carries both young with her. The zoo itself has not yet announced anything. According to visitors who have been asking about this, they will not do so until it is certain that the surviving young is through the critical period.

Yesterday, another chimpanzee was born at Burgers' Zoo. The 29-year-old mother has not successfully raised a young so far. The first signs look positive. Given the still fragile situation, the zookeepers and biologists are keeping a close eye on them.

And another chimpanzee birth in the Netherlands. A young was born at Beekse Bergen on 24 October. Mother of the young is Nadine. The sex of the young is not yet known.

DierenPark Amersfoort itself announced the birth today as well. It is now known that the young is a male. He has been given the name Obi. For mother Chura, it is her third young. For the zoo, the birth came as a surprise. This is because the males in the group are receiving contraception.

A newspaper article reveals a little more about the birth of this chimpanzee:

The birth was a big surprise for the zoo and also not intended. Both males in the group have been sterilised. This is because both males are not a pure subspecies. It is not yet known which of the two males is the father; this will be investigated with a DNA test.

The zoo had received a breeding recommendation with a male of the Western subspecies. This male is not expected to come to Dierenpark Amersfoort until early 2025, when the new enclosure will be ready.

Recently, a second chimpanzee was born at Beekse Bergen. Mother of the young is Pepa.

Mother Pepa and her young live in the chimp group in the middle part of the zoo. Nadine and her young live in the chimp group at the front of the zoo.
