At Zoo Antwerpen, 40-year-old chimpanzee Kitoto died today. She was recently operated to remove her uterus because there was a tumour there. She initially recovered well from the surgery. However, malignant cells were found in the removed tissue. It is suspected that she died of lung cancer, which is a commonly seen metastasis of uterine cancer. Following Kitoto's death, the chimpanzee group in Antwerp now consists of 10 animals, five males and five females.

Sorry to hear this news.
Does someone know why Claudius was moved to Arnhem? I thought male chimpanzees remain in the group nowadays and the females move from their birth group?!?

I persume it had something to do with the fact that he was a Western common chimpanzee
(Pan troglodytes verus), given that the EEP wants to focus on this subspecies.
That works until a group lacks breeding males, which Arnhem did. Claudius was no longer needed at his former home, so was sent to Arnhem to mate with the western females in the group as part of the breeding programme.
Okay, certainly makes sense. It's just not really a first time and surprising incident when introducing particularly a male chimpanzee into a new group.
Unfortunately that’s the risk with chimpanzees - the same has also happened when introducing females to a new group.
Based on the short description it was conflict with 2 resident males with which he had been introduced already for a bit, but the 2 males rekindled an old alliance and wounded Claudius severely and he succumbed to his injuries a few days later.

Malipo the 12 years old chimpanzee suddenly died on the 4th of January in Zoo Győr, Hungary.
The cause of death: acute cardiac death due to myocardial degeneration.
I have known him since he was a baby and wanted to visit him again this year.
In the last few years he became the alpha male of his group and he was the father of little Nadin.

A Central chimpanzee (P. t. troglodytes) was born at Zoo Plzen on 28 December. It is a male. The mother is Maria, the father is Siri.

A chimpanzee was born at Dierenrijk last Tuesday. Mother of the baby is Jana. Unfortunately, the youngster died during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. At the moment, the young is still in the enclosure. Later, the youngster will be examined to find out the cause of death.

Earlier this month 42-year old female Common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) Cindy passed away. Currently Landau has two chimpanzees left Bägges (*1982) and Gerti (*1976).

In Bioparc Valenica two Western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) were born earlier this year. January female Noelia gave birth for the first time and in February her sister Natalia gave birth, sadly Natalia's young passed away a week later.
