i know that drayton manor has chimps, but i'd like to know a bit more about them. dyaton manor zoo is often overlooked and so i'm not expecting miracles:)

So is Toto left by himself now?

Yep they only had the 1 on my last visit,he seemed to be enjoying himself throwing stuff at some visitors.

shouldnt it be moved onto another colection then? its seems rather silly to house a lone chimp especially when they are social animals.

Personally i think drayton should get rid of animals all together.

ive seen the chimp throw things before (pics) theres a really good vid on youtube

The chimp is very old to move him from what has been his home since my first visit to the place in the 1980`s i think would be un-fair on him hes very well looked after and well loved by the staff at the park,as for removing animals from the place i say no it a great place to wander round on a cold winters day next to no visitors so you have the zoo to yourself more or less,in any case all the animals enclosures are pretty good not the best by along shot but not the worst either.

I think Drayton Manor is a tradditional but functional zoo..many of the enclosures have been there since the zoo was built, i would like to see Drayton follow the example of places like Chessington and Flamingoland and give their animal areas some much needed attention

I agree with zoogiraffe that , though fairly basic , there is nothing wrong with the animal housing at Drayton Manor . Modern housing which may look more attractive to the average visitor does not always serve its residents so well .

fair enough...i still dont agree with having a lone chimp.
In most cases i would agree with you about keeping a Chimp on its own but he`s been on his own for at least 6 years if not longer so moving him in with other Chimps at his age wouldn`t be fair.

this is crazy. The enclosure is perfectly adequate compared to some other UK establishments. There is nothing to stop a wealthy, profitable theme park such as Drayton manor from acquiring two or three older female chimpanzees and intergrating them with this male. The fact he has been in this state for some time really isn't a justification. A comparable situation would be with the gorilla at Longleat, but at least they have the excuse that they wouldn't be able to source a female gorilla.

very true, has anyone got any photos of the chimp cage?

the chimp enclosure isn't a cage, it's fenced by glass from the public side, on the chimp side there is a slope towards the glass, the slopes made of wood and earth, the three other walls (not open to the public) are solid and the chimp house is on the back wall. (i think)

The fact that he has been alone for several years is not a good reason on its own, to make him live 'in solitary' for the rest of his life. That would be acceptable only if he is seriously anti-social with other chimps, which appears not to be the case. They would probably only need to add a single animal- more than one, particulaly if they are already bonded together, might be too stressful for him to handle. Either sex would do but a female is a nicer, more logical idea. Two zoos nearby- Twycross and Dudley have no shortage of chimps. Even a temporary loan could be possible and if they proved compatable, the enrichment to this male's life would be huge.

Is Toto still alive? I saw him about a year ago he seemed reasonably happy considering he was on his own.
