Now that christmas isn't to far away I was just wondering what you would give to your local zoo as a present if money wasn't a problem
My present to Dudley zoo would be a pair of ant eaters to put in the old polar bear enclosure as we don't see many of these in zoo's nowadays
just wondered what everyone else thought
 
Anteaters are more common here than you think; London, Colchester, Marwell, Howletts, Edinburgh, Belfast, Amazon World and soon Longleat have them. ;)

Mine to Marwell would be some small tropical trees to put it in the Okapi Paddocks, a pack of hunting dogs, a pair of clouded leopards, a group of gorillas and a lot of funds to build enclosures for them. :)
 
Mine would be a brand new Leopard Complex at my Local Zoo Linton.
With Tall pentagon shaped fenced roofed enclosure's for the African Leopard and Snow Leopard with loads of vegitation and platforms with an outside enclosure with a large rock centered in the middle for each of the species.
Also with a 3rd Tall roofed enclosure for the elderly female Lisa.
This would give plenty of room for breeding in taller enclosures :) - And the choice of undercover or not.
 
If money was not an option I would give Banham Zoo £100m. £30m for a charity of their choice (most likely to do with Snow Leopards knowing Banham!) and £70m for the expansion of the zoo and aquisition of new exhibits and animals and gardens etc etc etc. Basically, whatever they wanted to do with the Zoo. I would ask only one thing. I would ask that they spend atleast £10m on creating the most amazing walkthrough Rainforest Exhibit in the WWOORRLLDD!!

According to what i have heard Longleat are not getting Giant Anteaters,they are in fact getting Tamanadu`s they just used the picture of a Giant Anteater by mistake.
 
Please tell me we don't have to start thinking about Christmas already! Anyway, I would give my zoo money to do phase 2 of our planned Africa expansion "Expedition Tanzania" (phase 1 is elephants, due to begin construction next year, but phase 2 is on hold and no detailed plans yet). My request would be to add black-footed cats to the plans.
 
I would like to give breeding pairs of broad-nosed gentle lemurs to Belfast, Bristol, Chester, Edinburgh, Jersey, London ZSL, Marwell, Paignton and Twycross - Cotswold and Port Lympne already have them. I'd like to present them with a couple of acres of mixed bamboo plantation too.
It would only be fair to parcel out another couple of dozen pairs to good zoos around the world in a similar way. The only problem is that there would hardly be any left in the wild :eek:

A brand new state of the art Ape complex to house Orangutans & Chimpanzees at Dudley Zoo.
 
A pair of tasmanian devils, some wombats, and a sloth bear to Cotswold wildlife park.

And to birdland, some new enclousures for their ground hornbills, and other birds that live in the tiny cages.

Strange how animals seem to go in and out of fashion-Giant Anteaters and Komodo Dragons seem to be almost common in zoos currently.

Polar Bears, fairly common in the 1970s when I was growing up, have almost completely disappeared.

I was lucky to see those, as well as the Killer Whale and Bottlenose Dolphins at Windsor (as well as a travelling Flipper show in Portsmouth when I was very young), a Giant Panda and a Koala at London-all either no longer on show or extremely unusual.

I would love to see Elephant Seal, Walrus & Gaur amongst others I've never seen.
 
I would give Paignton the chance to revamp the orangutans' side of the Ape House so that it is more suitable for them than gorillas, to divide the show den so that they can be separated yet still have space and to provide far more enrichment so that they don't look like the gorillas' poor relations. I would also pay the zoo so that I could be an orangutan Keeper for the Day permanently ;)
 
I would build a completely new and better designed indoor enclosure and exhibition den for Paignton's orangutans but still connected to the existing island(or at least to the further wooded end) I would replace them in the existing house with a breeding group of Gorillas, having made a third island for them between the two existing ones.
 
First of all for me it'd be to the Cotswold Falconry Center. I'd give them as much money as they needed for any projects then I'd give 1 million to the save the vulture campaign. I would also give them a pair of Philippine Eagles and a Harpy eagle.
 
I would give any zoo who wants it a lot of dynamite and a balaclava to help deal with pain in the ass listed buildings ;)

OK, Pertinax, your gift is much more generous than mine so they'll probably opt for yours. So I'll add my contribution so that the orangs get a super dooper purpose built house (probably have to evict the lemurs but only 2 are free range now so it should be easy to relocate them), as long as they still have their large island. They'll need more staff to cover two ape houses so my voluntary input will be more valuable ;)

I would site the new Orangutan House somewhere at the far end of their island. the third island would probably have to take some land from each of the existing islands but not too much.
Then they could get a new trio of Gorillas (one male, two females) to start their breeding group.;)
 
OK, that's a deal then! The orangs lose a bit of island but gain the lemur wood trees. Your new gorilla island could also incorporate the small orang island. (We are straying into 'My Ideal Zoo' territory here ;) )
