The Cincinnati Zoo has partnered with the Dublin Zoo to improve Cincinnati’s elephant program. In the summer of 2019, the zoo director told me that Cincinnati and Dublin are currently working on negotiations that would transfer a couple elephant cows from Dublin to Cincinnati. I am not sure if this plan is still in action though.
The current ideas the zoo has for this area are to bring in another species of giraffe or create a mix-species habitat housing Southern White Rhinoceros and Grevy’s Zebra. Sadly no plans for Asian species but that may change as these ideas are not reality.
If this happens that would be wonderful! Dublin currently has 7 cows (all related and all viable breeding candidates) so even if they send a few to Cincinnati, they would still have a solid breeding herd. Maybe they are waiting for the younger cows to mature and then they will send them over, we will find out sooner or later...
It would be great if they bring in some Asian hoofstock to inhabit this area, as most Asian hoofstock have very few holders in the US.
Sorry I should've specified that, yes I did mean AZA zoos only.If referring to AZA zoos alone, then this is true. There are practically countless Nilgai, blackbuck, sika, and a few others in private hands.
Can anyone elaborate where the new elephant habitat is to be sited?A recent article about the upcoming elephant complex. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new habitat will occur on Tuesday morning. Cincinnati Zoo hope to house a multigenerational breeding herd of 8 to 10 elephants: Cincinnati Zoo hoping for elephant babies as habitat grows five times larger
The elephant habitat is going onto the Safari Parking Lot, and AFAIK there will be no species lost for the development (unless you count white lions for an undetermined primate species as per the concept artCan anyone elaborate where the new elephant habitat is to be sited?
Will there be species lost for it to happen?
What about their plans for another species of giraffe and zebra?
They have Plains Zebra. They have never had Grant's Zebra, at least not in the past 20 years if anything. The elephant habitat is going onto the Safari Parking Lot, and AFAIK there will be no species lost for the development (unless you count white lions for an undetermined primate species as per the concept art). I am unfamiliar with the zoo's plans for another giraffe/zebra species, and frankly find it unnecessary. They already have Grant's zebra and Masai giraffe, unless they decide to switch to Hartmann's mountain zebra.
Just edited my post, thanks for keeping me straight! They have Plains Zebra. They have never had Grant's Zebra, at least not in the past 20 years if anything.
If the zoo were to go through with the idea of another giraffe species, the only option would be hybrid giraffe. Zebra wise they would house Grevy’s Zebras with Southern White Rhinoceros. What about their plans for another species of giraffe and zebra?
The Grant’s zebra is a subspecies of the plains zebra, which is the most common subspecies in North America— although many are to some degree hybrids. The plains zebras currently in Cincinnati do phenotypically match the Grant’s subspecies. They have Plains Zebra. They have never had Grant's Zebra, at least not in the past 20 years if anything.
This is so exciting! Hopefully, they do end up getting the cows from Dublin! Also interestingly, all the cows from Dublin are related to Schottzie so they would have a nice matriarchal herd if they imported some of those cows. And, this would finally allow Sabu to breed since he has no surviving offspring and Jati is likely post-reproductive at this point. It is confirmed that the Cincinnati Zoo will be welcoming a pair of female elephants when the new habitat opens. Also the zoo’s plan to build a parking garage has been indefinitely canceled. Here is the link to the source of this information: Cincinnati Zoo will grow a herd of Asian elephants. Besides being cool, here's why that matters In the concept art of this article is shows gibbon multiple times, so I assume they are still in the plan.

The article states the the elephants will arrive in 2023.I'm really busy right now and had to skim through it, did the article mention 2023?
Wondering if that only refers to their arrival and NOT completion of the exhibit. Since it is, or was set to open two years later. I know it says arrival, but it's not like they have a whole lot of space at the moment. The article states the the elephants will arrive in 2023.
I assume it is 2023 is the completion year because the zoo can not hold any more elephants in the current habitat.Wondering if that only refers to their arrival and NOT completion of the exhibit. No offense to the rhinos... or the garage, but of the three main remaining future plans, I'd say Elephant Trek is the needed upgrade. Plans of course can always change again, but it appears they moved the Primate exhibit to be in front of the elephant yard(s) instead of putting them off to the side.I assume it is 2023 is the completion year because the zoo can not hold any more elephants in the current habitat.
It kinda looks like the siamangs are moving over to the Elephant Trek based on those renderings... would lemurs be good replacements for the gibbon islands on the Zoo's main lake?No offense to the rhinos... or the garage, but of the three main remaining future plans, I'd say Elephant Trek is the needed upgrade.
