The old thread was titled 2016 and was quite long, so I thought it best to create a new thread for the new year. Please begin using this thread on January 1.

Kudu21 created it but I wanted to keep the tradition alive by naming each thread 'What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo'.... And I would often start it on January 1st, and the first post would entail a time line about the events of the following year.

Moebelle, glad to hear you are doing another years recap of 2016. Will it include new species throughout the year as well?

For the most part it will describe the arrival of star species yes but I will also do a full species list as well.

Edited after I misunderstood

Do you by chance now if Cincinnati has had another Potto birth or if they are expecting one?

There has not been a recent birth;however, it is certainly possible that one could be due.

Berit left for Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, WI, and has been on display there since early December.

Thanks. That's what I thought, but since Tasul died and Nora was alone in Oregon, I wondered if they would change plans and send Berit there.

I was curious about that too. But I'm guessing since the three zoos already made arrangements, they kept to it. Perhaps in a couple years, one of the cubs from Columbus Zoo will move to Oregon to keep Nora company.

@Kudu21 Sedona never sired pups at CZBG did she?
That is correct. She came here with her sister Maya in November of 2007 after our then pack of 10 (1.1 + 8 pups born in May of that year) moved to the Wolf Haven Animal Preserve in South Salem, New York because the pups had outgrown the exhibit. The sisters lived here alone together until Maya's death in April of this past year.

I got this info from hearing them and I confirmed that the Kea are back on exhibit.

There is a new rendering up by gorilla world and it seems as if their website it failing to tell the truth. It says that the Colobus will get a new island, moated habitat but the birds eye view plan shows that the two outdated monkey exhibits will be untouched in the renovations.

And here's my last update and it entails the Reptile House.

A Lace Monitor has replaced the Gabon vipers. There are now two large monitors in the building (Ornate). The gaboon Viper was moved to the black Kingsnake exhibit. The Kingsnake was moved to the black Rat Snake exhibit. A corn snake replaced the Pueblan milk snake. A Florida pine snake replaced the rhino Viper. Lastly a beaded lizard is back on exhibit, replacing the northern copperhead.

It is exciting to hear that they have finally put at least one of the lace monitors on exhibit! I've been wondering if and when it'd ever happen.

In other news,

The Eurasian eagle owl pair have been taken off exhibit due to the Gorilla World construction; they will return when it is complete.

Last year's Steller's sea eagle has also been taken off exhibit because his parents were beginning to become aggressive, trying to evict him from the nest.
