Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Cincinnati Zoo News 2017

Video showcasing how the zoo has been milking Nile hippo cow, Bibi, to provide vital nutrients for her premature calf:

Great to see this little calf gaining life at such a strong pace after an such early birth. And kudos too for the cinnci zoo staff for not only providing such good care, but also on the fact that this is the first hippo baby in 65 years! So premature or not, the birth is worth celebration.

From the zoo's Facebook page:

The fight to nurse our premature baby hippo to health continues. At this morning’s AM wellness check the zoo veterinarians found that the hippo baby's glucose levels were low and her Ph levels were off. They have inserted an IV for fluids, dextrose, and supportive supplements as needed to get numbers up to where they should be. She has been gaining weight steadily since she was born, on January 24, but did not gain any weight since yesterday. It is not uncommon for premature babies to experience difficulty with digestion and regulating their metabolism. The animal care staff is adjusting her formula and supplements in order to aid with digestion. Her care team continues to work around the clock to help her stabilize and gain strength.

In Manatee Springs, both the Snapping turtles have been removed. The Piranhas from the Invaders exhibit, along with some cichlids, have replaced them. Now that remains in the Invaders tanks are some cichlids and a basilisk.

The cubs were pulled and are being cared for in the nursery after Cinta's maternal instincts did not kick in

And a video update on Fiona, the hippo calf:

This zoo staff is definitely working around the clock. Are there any other births in the near future? Isn't the black rhino later in the year?
