Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Cincinnati Zoo News 2025

What exactly happened to the pregnancy of Isla the tamandua? I first heard last year she was expecting twins, then one pup was miscarried as of last July. Has anyone heard what happened with the other expected pup?

Since I am a season pass holder, the zoo has a season pass holder Facebook page that you have to be accepted to join. This was posted earlier today by a staff member at the zoo and is VERY interesting to me.. “Their habitat (The Veldt) will be reimagined for other species.” This makes it sound like they will not be returning to the veldt once renovations are done. Veryyyyyy interesting considering in the master plan they were returning to the veldt. It does also say that “a new home for them is part of the zoo’s roadmap.” Let the speculation begin. Just from the space they have to work with, it makes me wonder if once they move the giraffes to where the elephants use to be, would they completely make a new area for rhinos where the giraffes and the Treetops (private event space) are located now? That would be a pretty significant piece of land. And maybe in the veldt acquire more hoof stock once renovations are done? Would be interested to hear other people’s thoughts. upload_2025-2-25_18-40-39.jpeg

The hard to find (I believe it's somewhere in the 2024 thread) updated master plan says they and other species will be moved to a reimagined space in Africa. Pretty much just as you described.

Do we know if all the other species from the veldt are leaving or just the rhinos?

I wonder what will take their / that area’s space. I kinda hope we see the okapi, bongo and zebras move to Africa. I thought this was to become a new rhino reserve. Is there now new plans?
I found it! It's the 2022-23 report but I believe it's the most updated plan we have. The description basically recounts the old Rhino Reserve plan, but the map under it shows it will replace Giraffe Ridge and the Treetops building in Africa. Unfortunately, it's not the best quality.

Apparently my previous post was removed as it was thought to be AI so I’ll word it differently.

I think that the rhino reserve exhibits were a little small and I think a renovation will change a lot.

Also Moebelle is that map showing all the rhino reserve residents moving to the area that is currently the Giraffe Ridge? Does that also mean that this will be the new Rhino Reserve in Africa.

While the description implies it, to me the map does not. I can only make out bongo, black rhino, and maybe zebra. The most current public Giraffe's Tower map shows a Flamingo exhibit. However, these are still in the early stages of design to our knowledge and I'm sure we'll get more updates within the next year or two.

The zoo has been looking after nine Orchid Mantis oothecas that were confiscated by USFWS. 250 mantis have hatched from five of the oothecas with 110 mantis shipped off to five other AZA zoos in the space of three weeks. This species is being managed by the AZA via SWARM (Safety Web for Arthropod Reproduction and Management): Mantis Mayhem! - Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden
