Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Cincinnati Zoo News 2025

News from the Cincinnati Zoo website

  • Sloths are off habitat in Discovery Forest. There is a Sloth in the Animal Ambassador Center.
  • The Visayan Warty Pigs will be off habitat until further notice.
  • The Clouded Leopard will be off habitat due to habitat maintenance.
The warty pigs are no longer mentioned in the daily updates, so it would seem as if the duo are no longer in the zoo, or at least they won't be for much longer.

The species's profile has also been removed from the website.

After coming across a recent video online relating to the history of the zoo’s Sumatran Rhino program. It was teased by director Thane Maynard through said video that the fate of the old rhino / Kanga Klimb plot of land will be the site of…

A children’s play area.

Yep, if that doesn’t sound both disrespectful and underwhelming toward what’s left of the former Wildlife Canyon, then I don’t know what is.

yeah that's why the zoo is going downhill in my opinion but they could make several different exhibits in that area and make that horrible kangaroo exhibit worth going down there

That is pretty disappointing! I hope they theme that new area to Sumatran rhinos and pay tribute to their legacy and the zoos conservation efforts. Maybe call it Harry’s hollow or something like that.

They won’t, they have seemed to move on from the Sumatran Rhinos and have gone to elephants. It’s just disappointing that it might be a children’s playground, but I’m sure it will still be a good one even if it’s not what I want.

This is why I borderline despise my lifelong "home zoo" and now claim Toledo by marriage.
No one in their right mind expects Cincinnati to bring back Sumatran rhinos or anything of that rarity or magnitude to the old WC exhibits. Zoos not named Bronx or San Diego, maybe HDZ don't do interesting and rare species anymore. I'm not one iota unrealistic about that.

What really grinds my gears about this particular space is the allocation for non-exhibit use. It's maddening. Cincinnati is one of the most space-strapped urban zoos in the USA. It's cumulative footprint is tiny. It has nowhere to expand barring a lot of residents giving up their homes and a lot of expensive construction and retrofit on top of that. Every major expansion this century has been due to repurposing now obsolete lots after the acquisition of space outside the historical grounds.

It's also utterly predictable as I called that no animal would replace the climb in this very thread.

It would have been nice to see an additional Australian/PNG species added here. Even something as relatively common as cassowaries would have been fun. Roo Valley was a solid idea as a use of the space, but at the end of the day it's just another kangaroo walk-thru. The ultimate redundant exhibit in a country where any non-mega institution is bound to be filled with entirely redundant exhibitry.

Hosen a white handed gibbon has a new female companion named kavi according to a zoo member on the zoo member page here a link to the group but its only for members of the zoo Log in to Facebook and the pair is on exhibit in the Africa building in jungle trails
That finally explains why I heard Gibbon sounds coming from the Gorilla building a month ago (yes gorilla, not Jungle Trails just in case someone thinks I mixed them up)

The zoo announced on their Instagram story that both Sanjay and Kabir, the two young male Asian Elephants, are now being tested negative for EEHV after receiving a new mRNA vaccine against EEHV earlier this year.

Media release by the zoo:

Groundbreaking Vaccine Helps Young Elephants at Cincinnati Zoo Overcome Deadly Virus - Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

We are happy to share that the world’s first mRNA vaccine against Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) appears to be effective. Sanjay and Kabir, two young male elephants at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden who were vaccinated in 2024 and later tested positive for EEHV, are now testing negative.

Absolutely wonderful news to finally have a solution that is proving to be successful! :D

This is huge for elephants in captive situations globally - and the future of the global breeding program. Hopefully this is the first success of many following the implementation of this new vaccination.

Does anyone know if the zoo still has the blue dukier that the zoo announced that they got a couple of years ago and if they are still planning to build an exhibit for it because they were going to but they decided to build the new primate exhibit in jungle trails in it's place that the blue dukier was supposed to

I am planning to visit the zoo on July 11th and I have a few questions:
• Will any species be off habitat with a projected 87* F?
• Is it safe to assume the lights will be on at Night Hunters from 10-11?
• Does the zoo still have the masked bobwhites?
• Will the Asian small clawed otters be on habitat?
• Is there any species at the old elephant house?
• Any recommendations using a Sony A6400 in a nocturnal house?
Also, I’ve noticed the zoo has removed the visayan warty pigs off the website and map, likely meaning the last one has passed away.

1. Every species was outside the past couple of weeks when it was in the 90's.
2. Every time I've gone around 10 they were on, but USUALLY not past 11.
3. They haven't had bobwhites in some time.
4. I was told 8 weeks after they were born. So that's past due so I don't have an official answer.
5. A female black rhino in the small yard for now.
6. That's what I use for nocturnal houses! I just point and shoot, I dont have tips. The only animals that are difficult to document when the lights are out are the Pallas's cats (who is also outside).
7. Their exhibit is currently empty.

A couple of updates I saw my last few trips to the zoo
1 the pallas cats lights were on in the nocturnal house at 1pm I thought that was weird I never saw that before

2 there is a pied imperial pigeon in with the tawny frog mouth in the bird house there is more imperial pigeons in the outdoor aviary

3 according to a zoo member on the zoo membership page the manatees are set to leave for Florida in October I tried to look back at the post the member said that but couldn't find it

4 I guess no flamingo chicks this year the zoo was a little late at loosening the soil for the nests

5 the okapi exhibit now has one okapi in it which is the one born a couple of years ago the mom looks like she has been taken off exhibit temporarily to her skin allergie treatment

6 the zoo updated the blue tree monitor and prehencile tailed skink exhibits in dragons and looks great!

Personally I was really hoping for a Cassowary exhibit, I think Cassowary plus some Kookaburra/Cockatoo/Lorikeet aviaries would have rounded out their Australian collection quite nicely. Of course koalas, Tasmanian devils, or a nocturnal room with wombats or quokka, or God forbid platypus would have been the absolute best case scenarios.

Very disappointing that they’re options to make a playground, a play area would have fit much better by their North American or Ape exhibits as far as the theme of “playing in your backyard” or swinging around like an ape themes as far as where zoos choose to theme their play areas go. The kangaroo walkthrough is enough to satisfy guest interactivity in this part of the zoo imo.

North America is getting a play / interactive area at the top of the hill. Jungle Trails also has several act like a primate games. Elephant Trek has a smaller one as well.

Thanks Moebelle, I wonder why they think Australia needs its own play area too, I guess they want one in each continent? Hopefully they don't try to shoehorn one into Africa next, still don't think Australia needs to have one too.

I bet they will! The next development is said to be Africa, moving the species from rhino reserve, along with black rhinos. The giraffes and flamingos should move to the elephant house too. I believe in the concept art there's a play area! To be honest I don't completely mind the play areas, as Cincinnati is a highly popular zoo among young adults. It's viewed to the general public (along with San Diego) as the best zoo(s) in the world. And from what I've seen, the zoo will continue to grow with their outstanding media team. I personally think the new spread apart "play areas" will benefit the zoo in more ways than not.
