Clearwater Marine Aquarium Clearwater Marine Aquarium news

New manatee habitat and rehab pools coming to Clearwater to preemptively combat a projected shortage of spaces for rescued manatees.

If I'm understanding correctly, the new facilities will give Clearwater the capacity to house a total of 18 manatees at a time (6 on exhibit, 12 in rehab pools). The project is expected to take 2 to 3 years.

It looks beautiful :)

AH, you beat me to it! I just saw this on their Facebook page.

This is a very cool project, it will help them expand into a needed area for rehab (their focus) as well as move past the Winter/Dolphin Tale era while they can still capitalize on it.

I went to this facility a few years back when they had 3 dolphins which were Hope, Winter and Nicholas I believe, does anyone know how they are doing? Also if anyone has joined their pod?

Winter has died.

From the aquarium:
"With heavy hearts, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium announced tonight that Winter the Dolphin died at approximately 8 p.m. as animal care experts from around the country worked to treat her gastrointestinal abnormality. The CMA family is devastated.

During preparation for a procedure, the CMA Animal Care team observed that Winter’s behavior and vital signs were declining. The medical team tried several life-saving efforts, but she died being held by her caregivers.

“While we are heartbroken by Winter’s death, we are comforted knowing that our team did everything possible to give her the best chance at survival. We worked with specialists and marine mammal experts from around the country to provide her with the best care available. Our staff worked around the clock during this challenging time,” said Veterinarian Dr. Shelly Marquardt, DVM, CVA. “I’m honored to work alongside such dedicated and talented professionals who gave their all for Winter.”

The CMA team expresses our deepest gratitude to the thousands of people from around the world who sent caring messages for Winter. She truly inspired hope and was loved by millions of people worldwide.

Winter, we love you.

CMA will be closed on Friday to provide time for our staff to grieve. A grief counselor will be made available to the team.

Plans for a memorial for Winter, honoring the positive impact she made on the world, will be announced soon."

Even though this news is by no means devastating to all, especially the aquariums care takers that have provided her with the most love and support over the years; I suppose you can say that I eventually knew that of the unbearable truth that one day Winter’s life would no longer be relevant in our world as a physical organism, especially after I had read about the news articles that Winter became ill from the infection for the first time. Which only continued to be more true as her conditions decreased to an uncertain outcome.

Certainly, this beloved cetacean will never be forgotten by no means whatsoever, and I do hope that you will find rest in peace, poor fellow.
