One one hand, any kind of aquarium expansion is very exciting. The flip side is that these renderings are not awe-inspiring. The one with California Sea Lions looks similar to the mediocre pool for that species at New England Aquarium (see below). Of course, the future is never set in stone and plans can radically change. The penguin rendering makes it seem as if there is a mountain range as a backdrop!

It looks like they intend on using the old/current dolphin or sea turtle tanks for the sealions perhaps. They are pretty much the same design and shape....honestly not a great choice. But I guess if they are rescue animals then that's OK.....obviously not local rescues though. I am not sure about their march away from local rescue missions to penguins and sea lions.

CMA suffered catastrophic flooding to the facility and damage to the facility from hurricane Helene. From their Facebook:
During Hurricane Helene, Clearwater Marine Aquarium was flooded with over 4 feet of water, lost power for an extended period, and vital equipment was damaged by the salt water, including some of our life support systems (LSS). Our facilities team is working diligently to make repairs and get everything operational as quickly as possible.
In an abundance of caution for the two manatee patients, Yeti and Zamboni have been safely transported from CMA back to ZooTampa at Lowry Park , Saturday morning. Once CMA’s systems are fully operational, we will coordinate with Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership and FWC to determine when manatees will return to CMA.
Sea turtles in rehabilitation are also temporarily being transferred to The Coastal Stewards at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton.
All other resident animals are safe, and some animals have been moved within the facility to ensure they are secure while we address impacts to their habitats.
Clearwater Beach is still assessing damage, working on cleanup and access through the Memorial Causeway is still limited while Clearwater Beach is closed. Unfortunately, we will stay closed during this time until we can safely reopen. We greatly appreciate the support of our partners across Florida and our hearts go out to all those affected throughout Tampa Bay and other areas impacted by Hurricane Helene.
