The Cleveland Aquarium existed from 1954 to 1985, with its beginnings founded by a local aquarium hobbyist club. The aquarium expanded much over the years and later closed due to poor construction materials and the lack of funding from the local government. The collection was transferred to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo (which still exists in the zoo's Primate, Cat, and Aquatics House).

Today an organization still exists that is working towards building a new aquarium in Cleveland...the organization is currently storing $1 million worth of equipment from the defunct Sea World Ohio that closed in 2001.
