Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2013

I know it's way too earlier to determine anything, but I am a bit curious what will become of the polar bear grotto. Here are two options that I think are most likely (besides keeping it empty).

1.) They give the grizzly bears access to this yard as well.

2.) They acquire a new polar bear, but only temporarily until a new exhibit is built at another zoo. I am thinking a possible home for Kali, and perhaps Luna as well if they don't decide to rotate her in Buffalo Zoo's tiger grotto.

First of all I would not all be surprised that it sits vacant for quite awhile. It was really sad seeing the pool drained and knowing that for the first time since 1971 the grotto would not house polar bears.Your number one and number two are both ideas that I had as well.Although its not the greatest exhibit in the world it would certainly be better than Buffalo's tiger exhibit. Those cubs need a real pool!

After speaking to CZS personnel last night, unless something completely-and-totally out of the blue blindsides the institution, to no surprise, there are no plans to pursue acquiring more polar bears; the exhibit will remain empty. As zoo-goers know, there are too many new and in-the-queue polar bear exhibits out there to warrant the USDA to grant CMZ permission to host the mammals. While I don't know if I'd call the enclosure "abysmal" ("not optimal," for certain), but it certainly isn't up to the level of several other parks.

According to a high ranking CMZ source the American Black Bears will soon move into the current Grizzly Bear Grotto and the Grizzlies would move into the old Polar Bear grotto with both species eventually rotating.

In other news a male Black Rhino from the Denver Zoo is set to move to Cleveland some time this fall.He is approved for breeding with Inga and Johari.Kabibbi will soon be moving to another zoo.

I am glad to hear this. I wonder if the empty bear exhibit will be filled by the other bears. I think the sloth bears currently rotate. I wonder if they will move in to one of the exhibits. Will they have to modify the polar bear pool at all since it may be deeper than they might want for the grizzlies and black bears?

I am happy they now bring a new bull rhino to the females and suddenly you have 2 breedable females in due course!

According to Dr. Chris Kuhar on twitter the zoo's carousel will be up and running in 9 months.

A ocelot is on exhibit in the Primate Cat and Aquatics Building. The zoo has 1.1 ocelots in the Rainforest and the male was still on exhibit there as of today. So either the female has been moved or a new individual as been acquired.

Cody and Cooper the Cleveland Metro Parks Zoos Grizzly Bear brothers are now on exhibit in the former polar bear grotto. The grizzly bear grotto is now vacant with signs that its temporarily closed.Perhaps renovations are needed before it can house the zoos black bears. In the mean time the black bears have swapped exhibit with the spectacled bears.

Cody and Cooper CMZ's Grizzly Bears are going to rotate exhibits for the time being.

The ostriches have moved from the Giraffe yard to the zebra/gazelle yard

In less than two weeks I will be making a college visit to the CIA (Cleveland Institute of Art), but while we're there we will also visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and of course.... the zoo!

I'm going to the zoo on Sunday and I have one question: Is the RainForest really outside of the zoo?

juvenile night heron

A wild juvenile night heron has taken up residence near the beaver pond in the Wolf Wilderness exhibit. It has been hanging out trying to catch some of the small fish in the pond for the last few days.
