Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2015

According to WKYC at 6pm, a witness said the parents were dangling the two year old over the edge of the viewing area. The cheetahs did not really care and went nowhere near the child.

I can't believe that someone would be dumb enough to dangle their child over a zoo exhibit, but I guess there are people who are dumb enough to do that. The boy is lucky he didn't provoke the cheetahs interest.

Parents putting their kids on top of zoo railing isn't an uncommon sight, so I wouldn't put it past some people to hold their kids right over it. Thank heavens the cheetahs didn't go after him.

Apparently now the zoo is filing charges against the parents for endangering their kid. Think the zoo will win? I don't know much about these things so I can't say, I didn't even know you could file charges against someone for endangering their kid on your property.

According to Z magazine there are four new additions to the zoo this summer besides Penguin Shores:

1. Stillwater Place – the new event center

2. A new Boomerang train in Australian Outback

3. A new Giraffe Encounter and other renovations to the Giraffe Campus area

4. A new 4D Theatre that will be located near the Circle of Wildlife Carousel and the Nature Discovery Garden in Waterfowl Lake. I am unsure where it is exactly going.

So, are they replacing the current rain, or building a new one?

It sounds like it is a replacement train.

I asked the zoo about the new 4D theatre. The zoo told me that is will open late June or early July next to the giraffe deck. (I assume it is replacing one of the greenhouses, but I am not sure.) There will be a new film each year with special films for Halloween and Christmas. The premiere film will be Happy Feet 4D. $4 per person. $3 for members.

There is no longer a tree kangaroo in koala building. A magpie goose is in its place.

The new giraffe deck is under construction.

According to the new map, the 4D Theatre will go where the conservatories are located.

In my opinion, Penguin Shores is the smallest penguin exhibit I have ever seen. Akron’s old penguin exhibit was twice as big as this exhibit.

The tree kangaroo passed away.
Also Mufasa the zoo's male lion also passed.

The new giraffe deck is almost finished. The area around the older deck has been re-landscaped, so the giraffes won't be able to go up to it. Looks like the storks will be able to move around in this space. Felt sorry that the giraffes area confined to the area around their barn as their savannah area has been flattened out and new grass planted.
The bonteboks are in the former zebra area. The ostrich is where the bonteboks were. No sign of the lone zebra.
The penguin exhibit looks like it would fit right in with the primate, cat & aquatics building exhibits.
The birds of prey cages are being updated with new "condor-minimums".
No sign of the bald eagle in the wolf exhibit, but the new pheasant was on display.
Chilean flamingoes were not on display by Wade Hall.

Had a pretty long visit on Sunday, heres a few things I can updated on that I saw;

Ursula, the bald eagle, still was missing from her exhibit in the lodge.

The Red Crowned Cranes appear to be nesting. I did not see the one bird move the entire day, and the Tufted Deer were not on exhibit with them so maybe they're already sitting on eggs?

I was my first time seeing Penguin Shores and it was so cringe worthy I didn't even try to get any shots of the birds because they seemed so miserable. Its basically a tiny mall window display they put penguins in with no natural light and barely any room to swim or even move around. I understand its only for the summer but I really wish they had just put money into making an actual exhibit, not this horrible temporary thing then eventually acquire their own penguins. I would really like them to renovated the the Egyptian goose pond into a penguin exhibit. I like the idea of having African penguins and flamingos exhibits complimenting each other in the entrance of the zoo.

The new giraffe deck seems to be finished structurally but it was still blocked off. Interestingly it seems to have a pond area in the center of it which was makes me think the storks may be put in that area when it is finished. The giraffes were still contained to their side paddock. I uploaded pictures of the deck to the gallery.

I haven't been to the zoo in awhile, but have the black-footed cats been off exhibit or is that something new? Their former exhibit was occupied by pottos.

The new snow leopard was outside and seemed to still be adjusting to the exhibit. I think it was the new one year old male from Winnipeg.

One of the Red Pandas strangely has its tail completely shaved. Does anyone know if it was for a medical reason?

The cheetah viewing deck is still blocked off.

Akron had an old penguin exhibit?

The mother who dropped her child into the cheetah exhibit only got probation and parenting classes. Its so messed up that she basically got a slap on the wrist when it could have resulted in the death of her child and the animals.

Given that there was no attempt to commit a crime and the woman probably does not have a criminal record. This sentence best suits the situation.

I'll only agree with that if she lost her job as well given that she ran a Kindercare in the Columbus area. This nonsense with putting children in precarious situation over cheetah, wild dogs and Jaguars has to be addressed

RE:Schreckengost And the bungling management of the zoo continues, unbelievable.
PS: If you want to see a zoo honor it's history properly visit TOLEDO !
